Savage Model 25

Looks like Savage brought out a .223/.204 sized action in what they are calling the Model 25. Medium-heavy barrel with a detachable mag and comes with either a standard or thumbhole laminate stock. Anybody have any experience with these? Was think of picking up something in .223 this spring for gophers/coyotes/etc and this seems interesting. Or would a guy simply be better off with a Stevens 200?

Just a couple of weeks ago I helped my buddy pick out his new coyote gun at Epps. He picked the Model 25 .223 rem with the thumbhole stock. I mounted a bushnell 3200 3-10x40 scope on it as well. I personally have not shot it yet but it handled like a dream and it's not that heavy. He has shot it and says it well inside a inch a 100yds. I think its a great gun for the money. I think total package was just over $1000. Holidays are coming soon, and I'm sure I'll have a crack out of it then.
 
There is a good article on gunblast about it, and although I think those boys are a little Savage bias, the targets don't lie and show that it is an accurate little rifle.
 
I've been seriously considering one myself. Haven't had a chance to handle one. I am a bit concerned with the bolt handle itself, it looks dinky.
The price is right on, with the Accutrigger it looks like a winner. I am not sure what I want .204 or .223....?
 
I read some reviews on other sites, price is what it is because of the following:
- plastic trigger guard
- plastic mag
- rimfire quality action

Everyone says they are very accurate, point well, 8.25lbs according to Savage website.
 
A friend of mine bought one in .204 Ruger with the standard stock. He doesn't reload and asked me to work up some loads for him. He had some Nosler match brass and I used Hornady V-Max bullets. I used a couple of different powders and got good groups with all of them but the best one was a 5 shot group of .26 inches at 100 yards. I am not a Savage fan but this rifle would shoot. You would probably do as well with one especially if you reload.
 
I think the rimfire quality comment was made in reference to the fact that the entire design is based off of the MKII and Model 40's (Single Shot 22 Hornet).

Definetly an interesting looking action. Three locking lugs though, definetly not like the Savage Rimfires.

Plastic trigger guard, not my favourite feature. Plastic Mag????? Can anyone say Tikka?
 
While the bolt might look similar to the model 40 from the outside ( I had one), its not... the model 40 has twin extractors like the Mk-ll rimfire, this is totally different with 3 locking lugs. Not the same bolt at all.
 
Well thats too bad its not a little lighter. 8 1/4 pounds plus a scope is a bit much to be lugging around for me, but it does look like a nice functional rig. I'm not to concerned about the plastic mag system though, i have a Tikka and find its quite reliable but who knows with the Savage. Ok, maybe its a little concern and maybe those with experience with one will let us know.
