Tried a site search here twice to no avail. "3C" has too few letters to be included in search, just get 6 pages of posts with the word "Savage" in them.

Looking for info on the above 22 single shot bolt action, with a Lyman 57MR Peep sight. Single shot, nice finish on gun. Accurate? Value? Age?

Thanks in advance,:)

James

No need for info on accuracy! Shot it today. Pellet gun target @ 40 yards, 7 shots.

Made from the 30s til early 50s. in very good condition..perhaps worth $50- $100. apparently some former owner has D&T the metal for installing the peep sight. Thus rendering the gun unoriginal. As for accurate, all guns shoot to one spot, you have to learn where this is . Most guns with a peep are relatively accurate within 50 yards. I have a couple Mossbergs with peeps that do just under an inch..

Sorry, but I do have to add that any of the few model 3Cs I have held, never had a factory D&T provision....I do bow to those that have greater knowledge. the ones that are available on US sites are not D&Ted either. But with further digging, I did find a pic of one c/w peep. factory or not is anyone's guess.

I beleive some savage 3 came with peep sights, although I think they were marked '3s'
It may of been factory d&t for a peep sight, and some owner added one.
Wouldn't worry about it, they don't seem to have any collector value at this time.
Savage 3 is single shot, 4 is magazine, and 5s are tube magazine.

There is an extensive post about them on rfc:

And my model 4 that I got from a cgner for $50(no scope), not pretty but it works

I have a 3C without the peep sight. I redid the stock in nice oil finish. There is factory provision for the peep, however. The one that come with some rifles is really crude. The sitht is adjusted by loosening the center screw, then pusing up or down.
I had mine at my table at a gun show last fall. I started with $100, later reducing to $75, but I brought the rifle home at the end of the show.

Spot on, the 3S came with what Bruce was referring to with the peep sight on the rear of the receiver held by one screw that tightened the elevation against the receiver to hold the elevation into place, the rear sight would be a sporting leaf that folded down and the front sight would be in a ramp with apertures that could be replaced by three different styles, usually a post or a post with a circle. A front sight hood and clip help the apertures into place, I've got a Savage model 7S (semi auto) with these sights on it.

The earlier ones were D&T'd with a 7/8" spacing for a Lyman sight, does yours have the 7/8" spacing from center to center? I've got a Boone mount and trying to find a gun with that spacing.

Other Savage 3's had the D&T for the Savage #150 peep sight which you can find on Ebay from time to time for around $20.

Just saw the new pics of the sight. Interesting. Does it have a 7/8" c-c hole spacing?

If you take the sight off can you find the application code on it?

Mad Dog:

Don't have my tools handy to remove sight.
Measured from centers of screw heads and it is 13/16" c-c.

Will try to take sight off tomorrow and post finding.

James

Update:
No #'s or codes under sight, and 13/16" c-c.
