Hi Guys,

I just saw mention of the this "upcoming" rifle in an online Field and Stream review; the Savage model 40 Varmint single shot bolt action (with Accutrigger) being chambered soon in .223 and .204 Ruger. This sounds great to me! I had thought for a while now how one of these would be a great rifle, and although I really like the .22 Hornet (it's current and original chambering) the idea of being able to fire inexpensive .223 factory ammunition really appeals to me. :)

I wonder when we may see them here...the Savage site still doesn't list these new calibers.

Basically, these actions are just a stretched MKII rimfire action, with the bolt handle as the locking lug. When the model 40 first was introduced, it was chambered in the .22H and .223. But I don't think it could handle the pressures of the .223, and never made it to showrooms. Personally, with these rifles selling for around $400, I'd rather get a Stevens 200.

I The 40 was my wet dream for a long time, but no one had them in stock. So I ended up getting the Ruger 77 Hornet. When the 40 did become available I tried it, and was disappointed. The barrel is 'weird' - it almost seems like it's a sleeved aluminium barrel or something. The overall quality felt very 'plastic-y' and toy-ish. It's very much like their mark II rimfire actions, for better and worse. I wouldn't recommend one in any chambering, especially not the 223/204. Spend the extra hundred bucks and get a grown up savage 12FV, or, if you must have the laminate, spend an extra 200 for a 12BV
