Savage model 64 VS Ruger 10/22 VS rem 597

Other then putting cool stuff on it does the Ruger beat the Savage or the rem 597. I'm saving up for a semi right now got a few months to go. Willing to wait since I'm still working with my .22 bolt.

I just want something to put a scope on and the Trainer isn't drilled for it and I would like to leave it alone. It would also be nice to have a gun I could buy mags for.
 
The Savage is fun but for the same price or less in some model's the 597 is cheaper. Also the stock 597 is more accurate then the stock 10/22 although doesn't have as many cool add on's. Although is does have more aftermarket parts then the Savage. Now for realibilty the 597 does need some tinkering on some rifles were as the Savage is 9.5 out of 10 times good to go out of the box. Also there have been a few issues with the 10/22 but since it's been around for so long it is well documented and easy to fix.
If I was going to make another 22 rimfire project I would get 1 of those Dlask reciever and barrel set up and go from there.

10/22 can be more expensive when tricking out than some centerfire rifles...
Also just as fun to shoot;)

No Marlins?

IMO, a Marlin 60 (tube fed) or 795 (mag fed) deserves to be part of your list, if only because of their accuracy and reliability.

I had a 10/22 and still have a 64B (Lakefield/Savage). The 64B committed to a friend. Nothing terribly wrong with these rifles, but they didn't/don't shoot as accurately as my Marlin 60s.

My two Marlin 60s were bought used but functionally perfect and accuracy is good enough for 100 meter groups with cheap Winchester bulk ammo of 1.5 inches for 5 shots. No need to modify these Marlins for reliability or accuracy.

The 60 and 795 derive their accuracy from the famous Marlin Micro-groove barrel.
 
Savage 64

I have the Savage 64. Its a great rifle, very accurate and reliable. Overall the biggest advantage that the 64 offers over others is just how simple and easy it is to take down and reassemble. The 64's out of the box accuracy is another one of the rifles advantages. I've probably at least 2000 rounds through the rifle since it have only experienced some minor feeding problems. In every occasion it was with hollow point bullets; all round nosed ammo has worked flawlessly.

Some people don't like that you can't get more than 10 rounds mags for the 64, also there are zero options when it comes to aftermarket mods. If either of these issues bother you then the 64 is a good choice for you.

I don't own either the 1022 or 597 but have used both a few times. Its a tough choice between the two as I think the 1022 is more reliable and easier to take apart but the 597 is supposed to be more accurate out of the box. Personally I favor the 1022 over the 597 for its looks, relative simplicity and tinkerability. I plan on buying one eventually...:D
 
I adore my 64's!

I have a pair (his n' her's) of Cooey semi's...love 'em. I bought them because I love 'em and they were cheap (as compared then...). They don't fall under cheap category any more and, the 597 for new rifles seem ok.

I too am a bit surprised by the lack of a Marlin in your list...as much as I love my '64s, the Marlin 60's and, 70's (now 795) are fabulous.

I'm not "anti" 10/22 but, for the hype...not convinced. The only thing I see about the rugers are the add-ons (don't apply to me) and the extra cap clips (should apply to all...lol)
 
I didn't put any Marlins on the list since, I'm having trouble locating them for sale. Generally I like to have multiple places to look for prices since there can be some variance.

I'm not really looking for a modifiable firearm just a reliable fairly accurate .22. I want something with a 10 round mag though as my range has a rifle night that I would like to participate in each of the stages you need 10 rounds per stages. The 5 rounder slows we down a lot shoot 5, stop shooting, load 5 even at my best I'm a little too slow to go out. If I could get a 10 rounder mag for my current I'd just use it. I don't want to slow down the firing line reloading a mag in the middle of shooting. I also admit I'd like to try some shooting with a scope and I just can't bring myself to drill the Husky

I got my 4 Marlins (2 x 60 and 2 x 981T) from the EE because I couldn't find any in Vancouver as well. But you can try some of our CGN sponsors.

The 981T has a tube-mag that takes 17 rounds 22LR.
 
how fast is the tube mag on the reload though. I was looking at the tube mags and wondering about reloads in between stages as well. When I'm just by myself shooting I don't care nice and calming to shoot 5 reload 5 shoot 5.

I got to try a buddy's Marlin 7000 this weekend.
Same as the 70 I'mfamiliar with but, bolt stays open when empty (with a "close bolt" lever) and, Microgroove barrel...

Gotta say, with that microgroove barrel, very tight groups [for me] at 100!

...I still adore my 64's but, if anyone has an extra Marlin....

You can get the Spee-D-Loader to load 15 rounds quick. Or you can use the same idea and make-up some DIY tube mag loaders from PVC tubing.
