I have a chance to buy a .22 Savage High Power mod.99 lever action with 10 boxes of ammo, some old Dominion stuff and some newer S&B production ammo. How much should I be looking at laying out to be fair to the guy? Any input would be most appreciated.

LawrenceN, the one thing you should do when asking for values is describe prececely the condition of the gun, a pic would go a long way in showing the gun as is. The other thing to describe precisely is the condition of the bore and anything that is not readily apparent.
I bought one last year for $250 but that was all it was worth, mine had cracks in the tang and forend, metal was well worn, rear sight missing but aside from that all the metal was original and the bore was very good so I got what I thought was a deal because I put some work into the stock and it is acceptable to take into the field now. Originality is also important if it has been drilled and tapped for scope or had sling studs attached this will detract from it's value. The ammo you are getting is really a prize because old original ammo of any brand is hard to find. It is a great walking rifle and pretty powerfull for it's caliber. Another thing with the takedowns is the fit of barrel to reciever, it should be tight and wobble free BEFORE the forend is attached.

Thanks BigBull. The rifle is in very good shape. The bluing is about 80%. The wood has some compression dents, but is nice and tight with no splintering or wood loss. There are no sling swivels or scope mounts and the sights are nice and tight. It shows it's been used but not too hard and not abused. I haven't checked too closely, but I don't believe that it's a take-down model. So what would be your thoughts on value, given the added ammo? Get back to me when you have a moment. Thanks for the input. Lawrence

Well, the ten boxes of ammo alone are worth $20 to $40 box with the S&B on the low end. Good clean original rifles of that vintage are hard to find and not cheap when you find them unless the buyer has no idea. If the rifle is that nice of a shape I would estimate between $400 and $650 with a perfect bore, not being able to see the rifle makes a precise estimate difficult. The other thing is which model 99 is it, they made a few versions in that caliber.
Hope this helps.
