Hi guys, I just picked up a savage model 99 eg 300 sav factory drilled and tapped. I would like to mount my Zeiss conquest 3-9x40 and make this my primary whitetail rifle. What would you recommend for a good quality base and rings combo. The rear sight blade is missing and I would like to mount the scope as low as possible. Thanks for your input.

I just mounted a scope on one this year for a young lady who tagged her first buck 2 weeks later. Weaver bases 19/14 were used which were not that easy to find BTW.
Now the part you won't want to hear....
The comb on these guns are for iron sights...they gave me a 2-7x32 to mount and there was no way it was going to work well, would have needed very high rings, and the girl wouldn't even be getting a chin weld with it. Also you are limited to how far back you can mount it due to the front base being way far forward. So I threw on a Japanese Banner 1.5-4x20 which has a straight objective, no bell, with low rings. A 3-9x40 would need to be mounted very high and I don't think it's going to work without adding a cheek riser.
Here is a pic of the scope mounted on it.

Thanks hitzy, after reading your post I studied Google images and I definitely see what your saying. Maybe I could drill in a tac pro cheek riser? :p I think I'll see what kind of yardage I'm comfortable at with the William peep sight for now. Guess I've got a year until deer season to decide.

Leopold has a vx-3 1.5-5x20 that would be a good match....

that would look and work nice. thanks for the advice. i'll start with hunting down the bases. any leads for me? you said they were hard to come by.

I have weaver bases on one and a leupold standard on another. Prefer the weavers as the leupold adds a bit of weight to rifle.I have a 2-7×33 in burris zee lows on the weavers and a 3-9x40 in low rings on the leupold base.

What do you think of the 3-9x40? Is it too high of a mount or still manageable? A few pictures would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks for the replies!
