Hi guys, just purchased a mint Savage No4MK1*. Has a 2 groove barrel, it's all matching including magazine.....appears unfired!!!! It's a lend/lease gun as it's also stamped "US PROPERTY". Question I have is, it has a brass butt stock disc on the right side of stock with no markings on it, has anyone ever seen a savage with one? It looks as if it's factory original and not a later add on!!! Thanks for your input.

Pictures would help, rare to see any No 4 with a brass disc inset, but it was pretty much standard on No 1 rifles. Maybe the buttstock has been swapped?

I think a No. 1's butt stock won't quite fit a No.4 rifle, but it might have been modified. It isn't that difficult to put a disc on a No.4 butt stock, either, and although it wasn't commonly done it only needs one exception to explain this one rifle having a disc.

The butt stock has definitely not been swapped, it's correctly marked with savage cartouche.....grain of wood matches with forestock. Also has the zinc buttplate, I wish I was better with the computer then I would post some pictures.

Seen plenty of No4s fitted with butt discs, don't believe they were ever "factory" but who knows!?
The disc is usually in a slightly different location than a No1, some NZ No4s have discs & also some No8s & near all the No9s if not all.

the No4 with the disc in this group is a NZ marked Long Branch No4 Mk1*

Sorry about this one but it got a disc as well.

A couple of NZ No9 Mk1s

Highly unlikely it has never been fired. All remaining Savage made No. 4's with all the remaining parts and machinery got shipped to Long Branch when the contract ran out. Said parts and rifles were subsequently issued to CF units. Don't think any of 'em had disks. Certainly not the one I had on my MIU, long ago.
Anyway, Savage made No. 4's are more valuable, Stateside. than they are here. Lot of NIH goes on.

I have seen them also, definitely was not done by the Savage factory. My guess is also NZ done.

Here is a No4 trials sniper with disc to the South African Royal Natal Carabiners

My No1 MkVI

All the trials No1 MkVI & trials No4s had factory fitted butt discs but the location of the disc was the same as the SMLE, all the No4s i have seen have the disc set a bit futher back, closer to the butt plate.
