I'm looking to get a .223 and I think I've narrowed my canidates down to the weatherby vanguard varmint special and the savage model 10fp. I've chosen these two also for their prices since I don't want to spend much more then $700. So what are your takes on these two?

i just picked up a vanguard, very happy with how it shoots now! (had some trouble wich turned out to be the scope) at 100yds it will shoot sub MOA with crappy AE factory ammo, and out at 200yds it will shoot under 2" most of the time with a flyer here and there, but once again with AE ammo.

looking forward to work up some hand loads and see how it will really do!

savage or vanguard, both had very good feature, I like weatherby Vanguard, with flat bottom, recoil lug build into action, sako extractor is a good feature over the Savage. how ever savage had a very good bolt head design(Floating bolt head), if you require change barrel change, on weatherby(metric thread), but that not a problem if you know what you doing.

Savage..hands down.
The stock rifles shoot well...and if it's not enough, it's easy to change out the stock barrel for a Shilen which will shoot better than you can hold it...
Take it from someone who had been there....and back!

It true, very hard to beat Savage stock, I got couple of Mcmillan savage 26" and 24" both shoot very well, 5 round key hole group, Very nice trigger.

Savage
I was looking at the Left hand version of the Savage 10 FP in .223. When it came time to buy that wasn't in stock anymore at Epps. A Savage 12 VLP DBM left handed in .223 was in stock and I picked that up and just love it. A little more but very happy.

I still think the 10FP in .308 will be my next purchase.

Cheers

I have nothing but good things to say about the vanguards I own. They fit my shoulder well and are plenty accurate right out of the box. The only downside to a vanguard is that there is not a great selection of aftermarket stocks available that are just a "bed it and drop in" replacement.

I don't think that you will go wrong with either, and if you plan to leave each in its stock configuration then find which one fits you best, and/or gives you the best price.

However if you think you may ever modify the rig, (trigger, barrel, etc) the Savage is the way to go. There are many suppliers out there that cater to the Savage system, and its design lets you upgrade it with minimal investment in tools and equipment.

You wont go wrong either way.

I've had several Savage HB guns and two Vanguards. All are great guns with excellent accuracy, but Savage has way more aftermarket stuff available if you are into modifying your gun. If not, then Savage still has the edge because of the Accutrigger, far superior to the trigger on both of my Vanguards.
