savage package series for hunting

hi everyone, i just passed my CORE course today and started thinking of going hunting some time this summer once i have all the required species licenses. now i bought a 11 FCXP3 package in .308 a while back and was wondering if it is reliable as a hunting rifle (probably looking at white tail or black tail). thanks

I hunt with a Savage 99 lever action in .308

My primary gun has a Tasco 3-9X40mm World Class scope (retail just over $100 if I remember correctly)

My backup has a Bushnell 3-9X40mm Banner scope (also around $100)

I use 165 grain bullets for everything.

I shot my first bull moose this past Nov with a lovely spine shot at just over 200 yards.

I killed my first elk with the same rifle in Nov 08. A clean lug shot at 500 yards.

I've shot numerous deer with it at ranges of 75 to 300 yards.

You don't have to spend a ton of $$$ on a scope if you can shoot straight. for what it's worth, I set my adjustable scopes on 4 and leave them there and never adjust them. Getting good quality scope mounts is more important than having the biggest, baddest, most expensive scope on the market.

I have had tasco and low end bushnells break in the field. Buying a good scope isn't about making up for lack of shooting skill, it's for reliability. And I appreciate the better quality picture. You also don't have to spend a ton of cash for a good quality scope. Bushnell 3200 elite, burris fullfield II, Leupold VX-I and rifleman are all great scopes for under $300. Buy cheap, buy twice.
