Have been giving serious thought to a new coyote rifle. Have got it boiled down to either a Savage Predator Max 1 or a Winchester M-70 Coyote Light, .243 would be the calibre.

Does anybody out there own or have any experience with either of these rifles? Accuracy, reliability, and general comments. I have been leaning towards the M-70 because Iam familar with them from owning several.

Thanks fellas.

I would recommend that you actually handle them both to see which one you really like. I really like the Savage, but the one I handled had the heavy bull barrel & I just couldn't see myself hauling all that weight around for one shot at a coyote.

I was in at Epps the other day looking handling both rifles. I agree the Savage is very front heavy due to the heavier barrel on it. And I have the same concerns as yourself in carrying all that weight around.
The Winchester on the other hand is more balanced between the hands but I wasn't that fond of the wide forend.

The world and guns are never perfect.

I own a Predator Max 1 in 243. It has now become my goto coyote rig. I load it with Nosler 70 gr varmint pills and to be really honest, it is SCARY accurate.

Yes, the barrel is a little front heavy, but that is a fairly minor issue with two 'yotes and three quick shots (the barrel does not heat up, ergo, does not wander - staying line straight). Also there is virtually no recoil and it stays with target easily. Very little barrel bounce.

I prefer the heavier barrel. The magazine holds a tight four, so I bought an extra and only load it with three. Functions perfectly, no misfeeds, misfires or any problem whatsoever. The bolt, well, is strong - but butt ugly. However, I used to have a Vanguard where I would have to remove face when cycling bolt. Y'know what, I'll take butt ugly any day as I do not have to move face at all and can stay with my target. I also bought a used Savage in 30-06 for that very reason.

Go with the Savage.

Thank you for your comments, you are very convincing. One other advantage is the Savage is $265. cheaper.

I presently own a M-70 featherweight in .243 that shoots 1" groups with 65 gr V-max's. That is accurate enough to let coyote's meet there maker, but of course my wants exceed my needs so we are seriously looking.

Just how scary is "Scary Accurate"?

Consistent 2" groups at 300 yards. That'd be about what...5/8" at 100 yards, plus or minus.

I wish I had some pics to prove it too.

My recipe is 37.3 H335, 70 gr ballistic tip (varmint) nosler, OAL = 2.66", no crimping (in case someone chimes in), cci 200 primers.

The drawback is that at 250 to 300 yards, the little pill still has lotsa energy. Teeny tiny hole going in, larger than fist size at exit. The hides are pretty much destroyed. I shot one at about 200 yards. Pretty much cleaned out the chest cavity of lungs and part of heart. Awesome combination.

I have the Savage in .223 and like all the other Savages I have owned it is an accurate rifle. Here's a pic of a 5 shot group I made while doing some load development. It still hasn't been bedded either.

Savage axis xp. Still has the factory installed bushnell scope and rings.
Using hornady superformance 53gr. rated at 3465 fps at the muzzle

4 shot group at 100 yards 10-20mph wing gusts

3 shot group same as above

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply and post pictures. The Savages appear to be consistantly very accurate. If I can't get any feed back on the M-70 I will have to order the Max-1 in 243 as all Epps has is .204

Does anybody out there have any commentary on the Win. Coyote light?

I'd generally take the worst Model 70 over the best Savage, but have fired neither gun. I think I'd let the ergonomics dictate the decision. If it's uncomfortable to carry or hold, then you probably won't enjoy one as much as another. You're not really going to go wrong with either choice. I considered the Coyote Light, but decided on a regular Featherweight instead.

Well I got a coyote outback witch is basically a coyote light in a laminated stock,it was a shot show special 2 or 3 years ago and they were only chambered for 22-250.I really like mine its well made and it shot the win ballistic tip under 3/4 of an inch and it shoot several other factory ammo sub-moa.It could probably do better with hanload and a better shooter.
