Anyone in the Calgary area have the tools and experience needed to help me install a new prefit barrel on my Savage 12FV? I got a new barrel during Black Friday, and have a barrel wrench coming in April, but am itching to get it installed before then! It sounds like I would also need to purchase a barrel vise and go / no-go gauges, but according to the budget my wife has me on I likely won’t be able to get around to that for a few months either haha. Thought I’d try my chances with posting here in case there’s anyone that wouldn’t mind helping me with this and showing me how it’s done so that when I do eventually have my own tools, that I can have one barrel swap under my belt to feel more confident with it. Thanks.

no but Jerry at Mystic did mine for a very reasonable price. I had it shipped to him and back in no time.

I did one back in the day, used a vice, set of vice grips, hammer and a couple of small pieces of scotch tape.
Turned out wonderful

Yes CSC, they recently swapped a CFW barrel on a Tikka for me. Excellent guys to deal with.

the most difficult part would be to get the old barrel off. I don't know why they tighten them so much!
when you install the new one, you can use a full length sized case for the gauge. screw the bbl in until it touches then unscrew 1/16 of a turn. Test with a few more such cases (I use 10) and adjust to the longest one.
don't forget to tighten the bbl to 40 ft*lbs. Barrel vise is recommended but not necessary.

edit: ft*lbs not lbs*pound

I was told to use scotch tape, If I remember it was about 3 pcs on the back of the case to get a perfect bolt close.

Your way sounds faster😃

if the headspace is a wee bit long, what’s the worst that could happen? The case stretch more than normal? Obviously if it’s greatly out of spec I assume the case could rupture. Though I’m guessing you could measure the first fired case to see if you should set it back a few thou?

yes, the cases will stretch and rupture in just a couple of reloadings
my suggested 1/16 "untwist" at the Savage's 20tpi thread provides 3 thousands of headspace
