I recently purchased a Savage 12FV in 243. Heavy barrel, accutrigger, blued barrel. Its a pretty basic heavy barrel rifle that I was hopping to purchase cheap and do some work to make it a shooter.

So I went to the range the other day to see what it had for out of the box accuracy. Here's the report...

I put on a cheap Tasco 2.5-10 Varmint Scope. After sighting in the rifle I put three rounds down range at 100 yards. To my surprise and to my delight, it printed a group that I could easily fit a quater over. I got home and measured from outside edge to outside edge of the holes and came up with a .8" group!

How's that for out of the box accuracy!? :D I couldn't be more pleased.
Here are some pics of the rifle and target.

Good shotting! 5 shots are generally used to average a group though. Also, there are 2 methods of determining group sizes. The first is to measure outside to outside and subtract bullet diameter ( .800 -.243= .557 ) or you measure the 2 farthest holes of the group from center to center, either way, you have a good grouping. Savage rifles are way underrated IMO. 99% of the Savages that I have seen print groups sub MOA out of the box. I would assume that this was done with store bought ammo? You could probably half the group size by handloading a custom load for the gun.

It was handloaded. I had a 243 before and had some leftovers that I took out. 65gr V-max on 40gr of Varget.

I measured the outsides of the two furthest holes.

That's great! You're getting me even more exciting about getting the Savage .30-06 that I've ordered...it's coming later this week. I have a Savage MK II GL .22LR, and if the big rifles are anywhere near as accurate as those little guys, I'm going to be very very happy.

I already prepared a couple of handloads to try out on the rifle I haven't even received yet to start finding out what it likes. :) 165 gr Remington PSP on either 48.5gr or 49.5gr of Varget, and Winchester large rifle primers. Minimum load for this bullet is 47gr of Varget, and maximum is 50.5gr.

I have bedded many, many Savages. This cuts groups in half.

I don't suggest this as a do-it-yourself project, but if you can find a fellow shooter who can bed your rifle, that would be a good idea. Bedding makes the rifle more accurate and more consistent day to day.

Take your rifle apart from time to time and make sure there is no oil or solvent on the bedding. Store rifle muzzle down to keep gunge out of action.

Are you sure you put this in the right thread?

I'm not complaining... I'm happy!
