I've been keeping an eye on Savage's offerings for 2012, and among them, is a neat, youth, single shot called the "Rascal". I've been holding-off on a Henry Mini Bolt for my daughter, then I heard about these;

Supposed to be offered with an orange, synthetic stock. If anyone knows when these will hit the shelves, who does/will have the best pricing, please chime-in.

Thanks!

Is that just a Savage Cub with a different stock? I'm too lazy to get up and claw my way into the gunsafe to check, but the metalwork looks the same...in which case, it will be a great little beginner gun. My granddaughter loves her pink laminate one.

I've never seen a cub in the flesh, but looking at the photos...you might be right. Anyhow, my daughter will be old enough to hunt grouse in a year and a half, and is really keen to do it. Any rimfire of mine she's used...she just finds either too heavy, or muzzle heavy...so offhand shots for her are difficult. I think with a year+ of practice with the "Rascal", no walking grouse would be safe! Keen to see the orange-stocked version they list on their site, it's her favorite color. :)

They were displaying them at the Toronto Sportsman show in March. My 6 year old got to hold it. Perfect size and at only 2.75 pounds a great single shot. I am a fan of the accutrigger and it comes with that too. told expect them in the stores in 6 weeks. That is right about now.

I just picked up a TC HotShot from Lebaron. I had bought my daughter a Savage Cub and shortened the stock for her but she ended up being a southpaw and found that a right handed bolt did not work well for her. Another nice thing about the TC is that as they get older you can add spacers in the stock for LOP. Plus the more I play with it the more I think it may end up in my pack for the odd road chicken.

I like the TC, nice sights too...but MAN, I can't even get my cheek behind that rifle~just SO small. Was still tempted mind you, but the one I was looking at (Bass Pro) was all ny-tied shut and they wouldn't open it for me. (?)

Anyhow, I like the Rascal, and "Road Chickens" is what my daughter is hoping to do with it when she's old enough to hunt next fall.

I got one at my local Wholesale Sports. They had 6 in stock and they are $189.99 on the shelf. Here is the wee sweetie beside my FV-SR project so you can get an idea of size. They did have a Savage Cub there and a few of those Stevens Cadet models. The Cub weighs about a pound more and it has a full size MKII style bolt. It also does not have fingertip adjustable peeps sights like the Rascal does. The Cub does not have a spring loaded feed ramp either. The Rascal has a spring loaded ramp with a bright orange follower. You just drop a live round in the loading port and slide the bolt forward and it self aligns into the chamber. The Rascals action is much slicker and smoother than the Cub's even though the Cub was a display model and had been out for years. I did like the laminate stock on the Cub, but it was thicker and heavier than the Rascal's Walnut stock. I have to say after holding them both the main selling point for me was the smoother bolt on the Rascal and the finger tip adjustable peeps. They were clearing out the Cub for $149.99, but The Rascal was just better overall.

From the Savage Website, the Rascal is available in orange, red, yellow, green, blue, pink and black and right hand/left hand hardwood. The Rascal weighs 2.66 pounds with an overall length of 31.5" and a 16 1/8" barrel... and has the accu-trigger... it is also drilled and tapped for scope mounts.
