So, I picked up a savage Rascal because I am lucky enough to have two boys (age 5 and 2) and two young nephews of the exact same age. I figured that I better get ready to show the young lads what it is all about and the Rascal seemed to fit the bill perfectly. I did go to the store with the intention to buy a Savage Cub, but the updated Rascal won me over. I put 400 rounds through it during my first outing and I was able to hit empty 12g shells at 50m with the peep sights off the bench. I figured that perhaps this wee rifle was capable of much more, so I though I better scope it just to see. Now, I have zero intention of keeping it scoped. It just seemed to point and shoot better with the peeps, but for the sake of testing I mounted a 3x9x40 Bushnell Trophy scope. No one has mounts for this wee rifle yet (including Savage) so I had to make some up to fit, but they ended up working perfectly. Here is the subject all ready to go:

Now, I decided only to try basic regular Canadian tire type bulk ammo. I figured that this rifle will only see that anyway, as the young lads will prolly be trying to get minute of pop can at 25m anyway, so only bulk and cheap ammo was tested. I had the range to myself here in beautiful BC

I zeroed the scope at 50m and for the first time ever for me I had found a rifle that was very accurate with Winchester Wildcat! This is a 10 shot group shot from the bench. It was by no means a fluke, as all the Wildcats grouped very well out of this rifle. The second best grouping ammo was CCI Blazer. Again, I have never had or even seen a rifle that shot Blazers even slightly well.

Now, I am going to mention that this rifle is a very smooth and easy to operate rifle, BUT it does not like to be dirty. I started to get quite a few extraction/ejection issues after 500 rounds. I am willing to forgive this as it is a new gun and it is very accurate, so it gets a free pass from me on this. After a quick spray with some brake cleaner and a little lube it was fine.
Overall I am giving this kids rifle 8/10 and I would highly recommend it to anyone. It lost points for the reliability issues after only 500 rounds. I figure it is a kids gun and a single shot, so it should be VERY reliable.

That is amazing, especially considering the low price and "cheap youth rifle" market segment.

If only they would offer this thing with a 5 or 10 shot detachable box magazine, it would make an awesome little grouse gun/survival gun/SHTF gun.

Really, I dont think I would want it with a mag. I like the single shot for the kids and It makes you take your time because you only have the one shot, so it better count. It is $189.99 where I bought it for those who are wondering.

I agree, if you are buying one for the kids, then SS is the way to go. But what if it isn't for the kids, or the kids grow and learn adequate safety skills? A repeater (mag fed) version would be awesome, as it would make the lightweight, compact, tack driver that much more useful.

I had essentially the same results with the Savage Cub I got recently for my granddaughter. I think that they are the same rifle, just different stocks.

Kayla much preferred using standard velocity ammo, as she didn't care for the louder report of the high velocity stuff. Actually, our best accuracy so far is with Remington SubSonics, which are a favourite of mine and shoot exceptionally well in a lot of my .22's.

Thanks for the review, been thinking about one for my 10 yr. old daughter. She's a year or 2 from being able to shoot a stock with a more normal LOP, so I thought a Rascal might be good. Besides, might be a fun truck gun for dad when she outgrows it. :)

Well, I'm with you there! I am soo in love with this little shooter.

I just picked up one for my daughter today.

It wasn't my intention when I went into the gun store today as she is only 10 months, but the smile on her face when I showed it to her since it is her favorite colour red I just had to grab it.

I have to say I've never seen my wife so happy to see me bring a gun home, she loves the look of it and we were talking about how good it will be when my girl is older and able to come to the range with me or mom.

It is a great working little rifle and I think I may go grab another one for myself to leave in the car for random plinking when the need/opportunity arrives

Well, then you do what i did and pony up and buy a CZ 452 Scout, if you can find one. Single shot adapter, and it takes 5 & 10 round mags. lightweight, compact, tack driver... But unfortunately not $180 either.

The rascal looks great for kids though!

Well after father's review of the rascal and having a good look at his I figured I'd go get one for my sons. Who are his nephews. Ironically WSS was blowing out the cub for an ubelivable price. I finally had some free time to get to the range to try out some ammo I found for my comp gun so to take a break from the monotony of ammo testing I let loose with the Cub Aside from the immediate differences like length of pull slightly longer and the action being the same as a MKII, the peeps are not as easy to adjust as the rascals as a screwdriver is needed. The one major difference that was definately noticeable was the bolt operation is much stiffer than the rascal. During a side by side comparison of the two late one night we agreed that the feed system in the Cub was a bit nicer than the rascal. The overall length was arround 2.25" longer than the rascal and felt just a bit bigger. As for the accuracy I wasn't able to get a definitive test today as it was a bit windy and I was getting those urgent texts from the wife wondering why the world was ending. Lol. But what I did learn was that The CCI standard and the Fiocchi seem to work the best so far with the blazers doing just fine as well. In fact I was able to hit golf balls at 50m with out too much trouble.
As for why I chose the cub vs the rascal I liked the idea of the action being the same as MKII actions and the possibility of getting a full size stock for it when my boys get a bit bigger. Plus I wanted to see if it would shoot as well as Father's rascal. We hope to do a test in the next week or so. Overall I think these are both realy great starter rifles and I myself will have no problem bringing it to the cabin for some weekend fun with the kids. We will try some shorts and CCI quiets on the next range day and get some photos up as well.

Got one!

Picked-up a Rascal tonight...very cool little gun. Can't see using it much myself (too tiny for my gorilla-like size) but 2/3 of my kids wanted to take it out and shoot it at 9pm in the dark after they noticed it on my bench tonight! lol She'll get a good cleaning, a wipe down, and then a plinking session next week sometime. Can't wait to see how it shoots.

My daughter picked-it up, cycled the action a few times, and then asked me if it could kill a grouse. :)

NICE!

I havta say that once you shoot it yourself you will prolly change your mind. I am very gorilla like at 6ft 260lbs and the Rascal is WAY too small for me, but there is something about it that makes me smile every damn time I pick it up.

Agreed. I'll smile more if it shoots as good as it looks! Everything is scaled-down, even the bolt handle. SO light compared to my varmint-barreled .22WMR and .223 Savages. When I picked-up the box the first time, I insisted on opening it just to see if there was a rifle inside! lol
