Savage rimfire's moving.

Apparently the Savage rimfire plant in Lakefield is closing down the end of the year. I'm unsure if they plan to manufacture their rimfires in Westfield now, where they make the centerfire rifles. What I do know is this. I don't like it. I do not want firearm manufacturers moving out of Canada. Para-Ordnance is closing down, now Savage. Apparently taking away firearms from legal gun owners isn't good enough. Now they must take away the jobs from people who legally make them. A sad day this is.

This saddens me no end.

I grew up near and went to high school in Lakefield. I knew a bunch of folks that worked there and the first rifle I ever shot was a Lkfld .22 single shot. In fact I bought a little Lkfld 22 at a show early this year and when I called the plant to ask the manufacture date, I ended up talking to someone I went to school with. A couple of times a year we'd head down to the plant at lunch to get catalogs. They'd send us back with a stack of them to share.

I know people who work there. They told me. I live in Peterborough, just south of Lakefield. I don't think it's just the political bullsh!t in Canada, though I'm sure that has an effect. The new general manager was apparently an idiot. Ran the place to the ground. He's been there for a little over a year, and this is his end result. What infuriates me is, I met him. The words used to describe him cannot be repeated in this forum. Every person working there is getting laid off before Christmas, and this **** ******* ***** **** ****** ***** ******* *** ***** ****** already has a position in Westfield lined up for him! Joy of being an American working in Canada.

That's too bad. I thought it was a modern plant, well equipped. Sad to see it go. Surprised the company didn't take corrective action sooner, and replace the GM with someone capable.

It is a shame indeed, the last 2 rifles which I bought were both Savage rimfires (93R17, MKII) and my next one was planned to be a Savage .22 magnum. The reputation the Savage rimfires have right now is second to none from what I have been reading, and I always prefer to spend my money on Canadian made goods if at all possible. Savage rimfires were definately a win/win situation for canadian shooters and now that the dollar is taking a dive, maybe they will have second thoughts about moving the plant south?? Heres hoping :)

has anyone thought about a petition to maybe get the top brass to re-think their decission?

Letters and petitions work well to newspapers and polititions. Businesses respond to profits, or, at least successful one's do.

dont under estimate the power of the internet .
lots of business's learned the hardway from it, and the right way also.
It lets them know who and where there customer base is.

I'll gladly sign a petition. Stupid question. How does one start a petition?
I don't want to see Canadian work leave, and am still surprised they'd be moving. It was a good plant, new machinery, etc. Doesn't seem profitable to move it. But what do I know? Maybe by some chance in hell it'll go back to Lafefield Arms, and be 100% Canadian again. Not likely, but one can hope.

I bought a Savage 22 with a heavy barrel, no sights. It was a silouette rifle. Nice gray laminated stock. Works very slick and one of the ebst looking 22s on my rack. Maybe the best. Only complaint is the palstic trigger guard.

I got it at the factory. nice people there. Sorry to hear it is closing.

I emailed a contact at Savage (USA). he wrote back:

Lakefield was a very efficient plant.

The issue is that 95% of product made there is sold in USA.

Paying duty on materials sent to Canada and firearms imported to USA could only be done when there was a difference in US & CDN $.

Now Canada cannot be competitive with matching dollars.

Savage must make the product in Westfield (USA) to remain competitive in the market.

Now that our dollar's taken a turn for the worse, and looks like it's going to stay a fair bit lower for quite some time, I wonder if they'll rethink. I'm doubting it but I can dream.

Para is closing down? WTF?
It's Miller and his "No guns or gun businesses inside city limits" BS

I remember the papers mentioned a few gun makers that may have to close down because of this and was actually surprized to hear they are made here in Scarborough.
Obviously never caused a problem if no one even knows they are here!

Here it is. Got this from another site.

For some time Miller has been unsuccessfully calling for and lobbying the federal government for a complete nation wide handgun ban.

He now has a new tactic. His latest effort “in fighting crime” is to:
-Close the Scarborough Rifle Club (which is used by juniors, national & international shooters).
-Close the CNRA Handgun Club (a training range for Olympic Competitor Avianna Chao for the upcoming Beijing Olympics).
- Prohibit any business from the manufacture, assembly, warehousing or distribution of firearms (Para Ordnance Handguns are manufactured in Toronto and distributed worldwide).

It is unbelievable that on the pretense of fighting gun crime he would take such action against law abiding people and their lawful and legitimate recreational use of firearms.

Mayor Miller has targeted the two million legal owners of firearms in Canada and his statements cast aspersion upon the 80 million lawful firearms owners of our closest friend and ally, the United States of America.

Some of his quotes:
The U.S. is exporting its problem of violence to the streets of Toronto

This should come as no surprise, there’s a complete lack of common sense in the US

There’s a heck of a lot of Americans who believe in common sense gun control. Maybe they’ll wake up and discover that they’re exporting literal death to the streets of Toronto and other Canadian cities.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Mayor Miller and his ilk is the scourge of lawful gun owners everywhere. Please send the following link to all your friends and associates.

I wonder what happened to freetrade.I thought that goods as long as they were made in Canada or the USA were suppose to go duty free.
