Im thinking about getting Savage Stevens rifle, Im just wondering what caliber to get. I figure i will be shooting paper for the most time, so i want something to shoot thats economical. When i become skilled with it i would maby shoot deer with it. However i also have a 303 british that could easily do the job, would i just be wasting money getting something like a 308? Or should i go for the 223 for cheaper ammo and make it strictly a target/varmit rifle?

Also how tiring is it to shoot a 308, lets say 50 or more rounds in one sitting? Is it comparable to my enfield? I can shoot a little more than 50 or so rounds untill i get bruising in my shoulder, so i guess recoil may play a factor in my purchase.

It will have less recoil than the 303. I got a 7mm08 recently in the stevens and it's very flat shooting. Basicly a 308 with a 7mm bullet.
I use this for yotes and such but will do a good job on deer too.

I'd get a 243 Win and put a good recoil pad on it

with the right bullets it works fine on deer within normal shooting distances

The Stevens 200 do cost only $320. I'd go for the 223 in a Stevens, because ammo is very cheap and reports on the rifle are that they shoot well. If at some point the 303 doesn't cut it for deer, you can get a second Stevens for not much more than you could sell the 303 for.

Ok sounds like ill go for the 223, i dont think ill hunt big game much, too much work dragging out of the bush:p. It should do the trick on varmits and paper, plus i think hunting with my old enfield will be nostalgic in some way. Thanks guys!
