I just picked up a savage 16/116 stainless trophy hunter in 6.5-284Norma. This model has the axis style mag witch I have no interest in. Wondering if I come across a older 116 stock with the bottom metal that has the release on the mag well. Will it fit my gun? Keep in mind mine has the bolt release down on the front of the trigger guard. I’d even go to a blind mag if possible. Thanks for any info!

Are you just not a fan of the little plastic springy tab style of mag? Savage has updated that style of mag to a much better (in my opinion) design. The new style has a spring loaded plastic slide in place of the springy tab. The updated mags work with any stock that originally used the springy tab mags. It’s not quite the same as the style with the bottom metal with the mag release built into it (my accustock has this design), but it seems much more robust than the plastic springy tab style.

Other than that, so long as you get a stock with the bottom metal (I think only accustocks have the actual bottom metal, but could be wrong) that has the same action screw spacing swapping the stock should be no problem. I bought a stock that was made for a top bolt realease (my rifle is bottom release) and I just filled in the opening with some plastic epoxy, the same stuff I bed the action with.

Oh, and you don’t likely have to find an older style stock, just make sure the action screw spacing is the same and you should be able to run the newer style stocks too (with accufit).
