I'm curious about the availability / cost of a Savage target action only (red accu-trigger) in Canada. Are they available? I don't even know where to start looking for one...

Also, has anyone ever seen one come up for sale second hand? If so, what should I expect to pay for a second hand one if I managed to find one?

ellwood epps used to list them, drop Kevin a email and see if they still do, I haven't seen them on the new website and I quit looking due to the new layout being hard on my eyes.........

Huge Savage fan and compete with them. On the new PTA consider -

action bolt spacing is unique so no aftermarket stocks unless you modify either action and/or stock. And Yes, it varies depending on which gen you get.
Savage target trigger is hit and miss on how light it gets. Some light, others not - no way to know until it arrives.
Still needs all the reg TLC of any other Savage action.
Large shank - different and have to be careful when sourcing barrels. Lots more Standard shanks on EE and for sale. If getting a stronger precision recoil lug, ensure you specify the larger shank.
Unique scope base - there are solutions, just remember to be specific in what you buy.
Factory parts are not available in Canada at this time - where are you going to find a large shank barrel nut, a trigger guard, a recoil lug? ensure support parts are included.

Me, I just work with standard shank repeater actions. So much easier for aftermarket parts, better aftermarket trigger, same/less costs. There is no accuracy benefit to the solid action. More options for future useage.

Considering what a PITA it is to source stocks and other parts, if you want a target action, buy a used one off the EE that fits what you want in the finished product. You can sell of the barrel and other bits but the core is already complete. In the long run, it will be easier and less money to start that way.... even if the only thing you keep is the action.
YMMV

Would a Savage target action purchased by it self not be the same as the action used in the high end Model 12's? If so, isn't a stock a simple thing to get from Boyds? And as for a barrel, can't a Shillen pre-fit be purchased that would screw right on? (Honest questions, not trying to be stupid...)

In their infinite wisdom, the new Target actions use a bolt spacing unique to it. There is nothing in the Savage world that works. The best part, the front action bolt is now far enough "back" that it is not readily adaptable to other Savage stocks.

If memory serves, the front bolt is now where the mag opening is on other Savages.

There are no target stocks offered in Canada set up for this wonky bolt spacing. So unless you want to modify the action and/or stock, you have no parts options.

And YES, there are 2 versions of the target action so you need to confirm what bolt spacing you are getting.

Stupid really.

Ok, so how much difference is there between the Savage target action and a Model 12 action from a rifle that is a few years old? Would it be worth building a precision rig on a normal Savage action, not the target model?

Believe it or not but the target action they use for off the shelf rifles is interchangeable with a 4.4 inch bolt spacing stock, the target action sold as a action only has the front action screw in a different spot. Boyds may or may not locate the screws in the correct spot for your action but Richards micro fit will as far as I know. I am fortunate enough to have 6 of them with the same hole spacing.......

Any LRPV rifle in the EE should be interchangeable with a 4.4 inch stock, or keep the original stock depending on your uses. I have screwed stevens 200 actions into both the FTR stock as well as the F class stocks with no modifications.

After I spent hours collecting mis-information from all over the internet on how the bolt-spacing works out on the STA's, someone finally posted an explanation here on CGN a while back. From memory, it's:
- dual port action = 3.44" bolt spacing
- single port action (Right bolt, left or right port) = 4.4" bolt spacing

No idea why the discrepancy in spacings for the dual vs single ports, but I hope this is helpful.

Ok, so based on the information presented here, the best bet would be to purchase a Savage Model 12 LRP in 22-250 and re-barrel it to a .308.

That way, I would get the benefit of the Savage Target Action with 4.4" bolt spacing, plus the added benefit of right hand bolt / left hand port for bench shooting and be able to get a nice Boyd's stock to drop it into.

Anyone see any issues with that idea?

From what I have seen with my own eyes, this is correct. The Dual port is the only one with "funny" spacing.

Yeah...........why get a boyds stock when you can get a better Richards micro fit stock to match your style of shooting???

I think jerry mentioned this earlier, but just get a 10, 11, or 12 with 4.4 " spacing and have fun. You can buy an 11 package on sale twice a year from wss and once you part it out you will have about $200 into your action. Install a rifle basic trigger and you're set.

I have on in 22-350 in the single shot left port version. You can make the trigger so lite it is scary. Beyond a tack driver. The prairie dogs in SD just disappear inti a red mist.

I'm not familiar with the Richards stocks, I will look into them. Thanks.

The only way to get the right bolt, left port action is on a Model 12 LRPV. I will be using this as a bench gun to punch paper and really want the right bolt, left port.

Feel free to send me your action... :D

Mystic is ofcourse correct on all his points and advice. However, the Savage 12 LRP was not mentioned. I have recently purchased one in 6.5 CM and it has the 4.4 spacing repeating action and fits right into my JP enterprises chassis. It is however a large shank.
