I was thinking about building a 20 VarTarg and was wondering where I could find a Savage target action to base the build on. Anyone know where I could order one from?

IRunGuns has brought in a couple of STA's for me. Canuck buck was a bit better back then, tho...

For ease of searching, here are the model numbers and particulars:
- 18636 - dual port - left load, right eject, .223 boltface
- 18637 - dual port - left load, right eject, .308 boltface
- 18183 - left port, right bolt, .223 boltface
- 18182 - left port, right bolt, .308 boltface
- 18185 - right port, right bolt, .223 boltface
- 18184 - right port, right bolt, .308 boltface

$632 US is the best price on IRG currently (18183) and has all 6 in stock. Epps is $800-$850 Cdn, and has 3 of the 6.

Good luck!

Thanks. I was thinking about this build and the intended use and I think I will just re barrel my Model 10 Predator Hunter to a 20 Tactical. It should be fun.

Yep, I thought about a build and after I added it all up got a decent deal on a complete gun off the EE. About the same price as the barrelled action I was looking at.

And it shoots like sharks with laser beams! So I win :)

good call, I have a .223 rem and a 6x45 both on the savage target action and feeding with the smaller diameter cases is a issue, 90 percent of the time you have to get the bullet in the chamber when you slide it in the port, if you just drop in in the action it tends to just run the bullet into the end of the barrel rather then feed it into the chamber....a real PITA when your trying to shoot fast

Yep, I have the same issue occasionally with my .223 Savage F/TR with the target action. I don't compete, so it's not that big a deal for me, I just have to be 'gentle' closing the bolt. The first time it happened, I was ramming the bolt closed so vigorously, it actually pushed the bullet a bit further into the case - a lightly compressed load of Varget so thankfully there wasn't much room for it to go. Occasionally I'll have to wiggle the bolt a bit to get the bullet tip to stop hitting the end of the barrel and enter the chamber, but that's about it.

The feed ramp just needs to be a wee tiny bit higher & problem solved...

What's the chance the rounds will feed well from the mag? It's currently a .223 rifle so I assume it will work.

your okay from the mag, with the single shot action the case is to small in diameter to line the bullet up with the chamber for smooth chambering, the bullet tends to run right into the back of the barrel below the chamber and stop dead, the magazine aims the case upwards just enough to guide it into the chamber. They run the 6x45 in a AR semi, feeding from the mag is flawless, feeding in a single shot target action not so much

Not wanting to hijack this thread but as the title is "Savage target action" I'd figure this might be a place to discuss my question.

So recently purchased a factory savage fclass in 6br. My issue is extraction. The bolt will eject a loaded round but will not eject a fired piece of brass. Always have to fish hook it out with a finger. During comp not an issue but one more move I have to make that breaks my hold.

I googled and it seems to be an issue. I stripped cleaned and reassembled but still no luck. Any CGN advice?

Thanks in advance.

I've had no extraction issues with either of my rifles that have Savage target actions (knocks on wood), but I have read that a LOT of people are replacing the extractor & ejector in their Savage rifles to solve similar problems. Sharp Shooter Supply in the US makes a popular aftermarket extractor/ejector kit & I believe they're available through Brownells.

I have a Savage Model 12 SS Single Shot Short Action in 20 Practical. I have no problems feeding the 55 Berger, seated just off the lands, or the 40 V-Max bullets seated to fit in a mag at 2.186". I have no problem feeding my 20 EXTREME rounds, with 40 V-Max seated to 2.04" and the 55 Berger seated to 2.214", by dropping them into the SS Short action but extraction is a problem of course. Even a 20 VT round with bullet seated to 1.886" feeds fine but doubt that it would feed from a magazine although the longer 20 EXTREME case will.

I have a 20VT built on a Savage target action right bolt left port and it feeds the rounds into the chamber really nice. I removed the ejector because I got sick of chasing brass.
