I was wondering what would be a better buy for a semi 22 ?

Savage 64G with a wood stock or a Remington 597 ?

I'm only looking to spent about $250 after all it is only a grouse and paper puncher, but I want some fairly decent accuracy at about 30 yards. Are there any common problems with either of these guns ??

I don't really want a 10/22.

I love my Savage MKII bolt action, but for a semi I would lean towards a Marlin 795 or 7000 (prolly a 795 if you will use it mostly for hunting, or the heavier 7000 for targets from a rest of some kind). They have a niffty last shot bolt hold open feature. I have a Lakefield 64B (same as the savage 64) that I always let my friends shoot, and everytime it's BANG BANG BANG click....dryfire :runaway: hehe.

I have heard alot of good things about them from people that want a good out of the box semi .22, and don't want a 10/22 that they will have to customize to get it to shoot :p Best thing you can do if you are in the market for a .22 is check out rimfirecental.com, they have separate forums for each brand of gun. But if I bought a .22 semi tomorrow, it would be a Marlin.

10/22er's: let the brand bashing begin! :dancingbanana:

My buddy has a Savage 64, nice gun and works well. Another vote for a Marlin 795....i own one and it is great, with a Bushnell 3-9x32 i can carry that unit in the gopher patch all day.

+ 1 for not a 10/22, just cause everyone's got a 10/2

Thanks for your input guys. Looks like I will be getting a Rem. Good price and good looks.

Whoa, stop don't do it!
There is a reason why everybody ends up at a 10/22 (or browning T/C etc)
Cruise the EE and get one of those;)

Well, I'm not to sure of the Savage, but I do have some time in with a couple of Remington 597's. Both would jam once or twice every other mag and were frustrating as hell for the owners.
