o.k., for anyone with the patience, a few newb questions:

- in addition to not understanding the difference between models 110 and 111 [anybody know THAT one?] i'm confused as to what fits what among the savage "brotherhood of the barrel nut".

- what models can interchange barrels?

- what's the difference between long shank and short shank?

- what stocks fit what models? [example: will a model 12fp long action stock fit a long action 111 or 110, etc.?]

thanx.

Savage ### (110 / 111)= long action
Savage XX (10) = short action.

a stock for a xx action will not accept an action from a ###

Shank: Small shank = standard calibres The only large shank actions are the WSM's, RUM's

Swapping calibres: To easy, but you need the proper bolt face (preferably with extractor and ejector installed (swapping them between bolt faces will bring on turrets syndrome), and a headspace go / no go gauge...and of course..the barrell

It is recommended that you get the right barrel wrench, too. It is tooled to fit the nut exactly and prevents slipping, and allows you to snug the nut up properly.

There's a little more to it that this - not much though. When I was swapping around my barrells on my 110 (.223 to 22.250), I also had to take into account the mag well, as the initial 223 chambering did not appreciate being stuffed with 22.250 rounds, so I had to convert to a single-shot follower. It was my gopher gun so I didn't care. Most standard long calibres pretty much share the same mag well.

I take no credit for this stuff below, I just cut / paste from one of many sites:

Here's some basic information on the various Savage Model number designations:

12/112 or 10/110 - Varmint/Target series...only drilled and tapped for scope mounts, no open sights, 24" or 26" barrel, blued or stainless depending on specific variation

11/111 - Hunter series...open sights & drilled and tapped for scope mounts, 22" or 24" barrel, blued only

110/111###P3 - Package series...no sights, comes with 3-9x32 scope mounted, 22" or 24" barrel, blued only, wood stock/leather sling installed or synthetic stock/nylon sling installed

16/116 - Weather Warrior series...no sights, only drilled and tapped for scope mounts, 22", 24" or 26" barrel, stainless steel only

There are also some oddballs like the 10FM Sierra, 10FCM Scout, 114U Ultra, 114CE Classic European and the 116SE Safari Express but this should give you a basic idea how Savage classifies their rifles. Hope this helps!

AK -Adjustable Muzzle Brake
B -Laminate Stock
C -Clip (Detachable Box Mag.)
F -Synthetic Stock
G -Hardwood Stock
L -Left Hand
LE -Law Enforcement
ML -Muzzleloader
NS -No Sights
P -Police
SE -Safari Express
SS -Stainless Steel
U -Ultra High Lustre
V -Long Range (Heavy Barrel)
XP -Package Gun
Y -Youth

Example - Model 111FLC
F = Synthetic Stock
L = Left Hand
C = Clip

basicily what he said only you don't NEED GO gauges.. just use a re sized shell just you now have a new stardard DO NOT use a once fired. sounds like a good idea but it is not.

BE careful with Short-action Savage rifles!!
There are two different guard screw spacings, and you cannot interchange stocks between the two.

that's great guys. helps me clear up the confusion. thanks.
so basically, models 110, 111, 112, and 116 are long actions and are basically the same, use the same internals [other than bolt faces, as per case size differences], and have the same stock fit [unless a heavy barrel is installed] ?
