I have a cil830(savage 340) and have been offered a trade for a marlin 336 RC, I think the quality of the marlin is better than cil, opinions? No scope on the marlin and the wood is a little rough, the screw on the front barrel band is missing. The wood on my cil is in very good shape the bluing is rough in spots, and has a bushnell scopechief 2.5x8x32, I shoot left hand and can work the cil with no problems but is easyer for me, what do you fellas think?

I would trade in a heart beat. The missing screw is a minor detail and you should be able to find one easily at a gunsmith or Western Gun parts for a minimal price. The scope is not an expensive one and easily replaced. If you really like the scope remove it and just trade rifles if it is not a deal breaker. Wood can easily be refinished and makes a nice rainy day project.

The 336 is a better lever gun than the 340 is a bolt gun. But the rifle you keep should be the one you will be happier with. Cosmetic imperfections can be easily fixed, so you should look past them, and your scope adds only $50 value to the deal. But if you can hit well with the Savage, enjoy shooting it, and find that the gun handles well for you, why change?

The Marlin is a well made, accurate 30-30. Personally, I find them more reliable than a Winchester 94. As for the CIL, they are a rebranded Savage rifle, very little collector value, but a good rifle nonetheless. If pointed bullets are your thing, then this is the 30-30 you want, although you can use Hornady LeveRevolution ammo in the 336.
The ScopeChief is a good scope and I would pay you $50 for it. Some say that this is a Bausch and Lomb disguised as a Bushnell.

Gunrunner100 has it......
Keep the scope and I would question why someone would do a
backwards trade?
Not trying to start a ripple but if both were on the table at the same
price, the lever would come home with me.
The Marlin with your scope mounted on it would make it a nice package.
Looky.

A Scopechief goes back a lot of years. The first variable scopes were built so as the reticule actually didn't change size, but as power was increased, the reticule appeared larger.
For example, if the cross hairs covered 1 1/2 inches at 100 yards, that would look about right at 2 power. Set the power to 8 and the cross hairs would look distortingly huge.
The first variable I had, a 2 to 7 Redfield, was this way and at the time I bought it, Bushnell was making Scopechiefs.
In the current discussion about the vaiable Scopechief, I would make sure it wasn't the early type, where the cross hairs appeared to increase in size, as power was increased.

I have both a 336A and a 340C. Both are accurate and fine bush guns. As others have said, the points you need to consider are:
1) Which do you prefer lever or bolt
2) Do you want to shoot pointy bullets
3) Being a lefty, which is easier to use.

Notice I don't discuss the scope because you can always move it to the gun you choose.

Best of luck. Both guns are going to bring home the deer/bear/etc that you are going to hunt for.

The option of "pointy" bullets is good, but you must make sure the magazine can handle the increased length of the bullet before assuming it will be a good option to have.
I have a 340 savage and when I tried to load spitzers, the rounds OAL was too long to put it in the magazine. It came to the point that I was losing powder space so I could sink the bullet deep enough to fit the gun. No real "plus" there.
The action on the 340 is a lot weaker than a marlin.
In my opinion , the 340 is a 200 dollar gun, while the marlin is generally a 400 dollar gun. (give or take depending on condition of each) Scopechief or not, thats not really an even trade (In my opinion)

I was considering a trade for the marlin, but it's in pretty rough shape, some screws are messed up and over half the bluing is gone on the mag tube. Pointed bullets isn't a concern with me , 100yds is a very long shot where i hunt. There is nothing wrong with my cil so I think I'll keep it. I really like the detachable mag and i can work the safety with no problems. I kind of knew the marlin is a better rifle and but mine isn't broken so I'm not going to fix. lol
thanks for the info

as a consolation, my 340 certainly shot the lights out versus any levergun I've owned. easily 1" to 1.25" at 100 with my own reloads. I never managed to get less than 2.5" with my leverguns. Not a big difference in the hunting world, but accuracy is accuracy. Plus mine had a 22" barrel, and the velocities were a bit higher. (I got between 50 and 80 f/s more with the longer barrel. (again, not much, but faster, and that means slightly more hitting energy. With marginal rounds like the .30-30, every bit helps.
