Save the prairie dog???? WHAT?? WHY???

The little old lady makes me laugh.

This might make you laugh as well. I know a biologist who works for Fish and wildlife who is an avid gopher shooter.

If he told me that gopher populations were too low, I would not question his smarts.. He has yet to say that, so I'm gonna keep at it.

The damage gophers cost me: damned near broke my ankles several times when tripping into a hole, my riding mower tires fall into so that the blades can now dig up a good 48" patch of dirt, dig up holes around my new trees therefore killing the roots, endangering my horses' legs - yeah, they get blasted around here. And we never seem to run out of them. On the good side, birds of prey get a free meal without the side effects of poisoning. Besides, gopher shooting is therapy, and sharpens my shooting skills.

Anyone who claims every groundsquirrel out there needs erradicatin' is a moron.

Anyone who claims they should be treated as sacred is just as ignorant.

The prairie ecosystem is too oft ignored or treated as 'bland' or boring. Groundsquirrels are incredible social creatures deserving of much respect both by themselves and for the all important roll they play in feeding the rest of the prairie food chain. Mass poisoning is devastating... as are unchecked hoards. Always make sure to save enough for next years shoot. If you have a purebred horse ranch I can understand the need for harsh control, but as far as the average rancher/farmer out here I think there aren't many left who preach eradication. Shootin squirrels is my favorite activity next to ###. I'd still like my great grandkids to know what a healthy colony of rgs's looks like though. Balance for ####s sake, balance.
