Hello all. Well I really wanted to take in the Kamloops gun show this weekend but other things prevailed. So instead I took my gas money and bought a really yucky No4 mk1 instead. I've never seen such a dirty gun before other then a dipped in mud one. I hummed and hawwed for over two months on this. SORRY NO CAMERA HENCE NO PICS.Now to the nitty gritty.
Its a non FTRed No4 mk 1 Serial# starts with 12### has a mk3 rear sight and a uncut barrel. The bolt# matched the receiver so that was a bonus, sporterized front wood and a shaved rear stock, both stocks moved more then the bolt, talk about loose. But there was no rust on this baby,so I got to do alot of scrubbing with the toothbrush WD40 and what ever else was handy.
One thing that had me a little worried was that the previous owner had a dovetail machined into the knox (nox) form, but then I looked at the EAL and saw that the military version was done the same way, I felt so much better.
I have a No5 forestock and handguard that had a thumb groove carved on the left side so I chopped off the end and turned into a ersatz L42A1 stock.Stock only cost 10 bucks but could not be saved without graffting on a bunch of wood. Not for me. Also I had to grab a magazine out of my pile of .303 goodies to complete this firearm.
Took it to the range and it shot about 6 to 8 inches low with a +.030 sight at 100 yds and the rear sight set on 200.So I punched out the front sight and put in a -.015(shortest I had at the time) and it shot about 1" above centre. I also noticed that the primers were backing out(not all the way) of my neck sized reloads(150gr Horn,42 gr 4064). The brass looked fine otherwise. So off comes the #0 bolthead and on goes the #2(longest I had) Problem solved. NO SAFETY NAZI'S PLEASE I'm aware of the Better get it's headspace checked issues. So its was shooting approx 3" groups with open sights. So all in all it was a good investment for me and my time. I got to spend time cleaning a old warhorse and having a blast. Thanks for letting me tell my story. Jim
