So I'm thinking about turning a deer hide into a wall hanger (fur on). What might be the best way to go about this?? Also, whats a good method for removing blood from the fur??

Is it as simple as a bathtub, cold water, and some soap, followed by salt or borax? I searched google, and see suggestions of ammonia and peroxide, but I put more stock in what a cgn'er has to say. Thanks in advance.

Send it to a taxidermist and get it tanned.

In Africa our hides were washed in salt water then dried in a salt pit before being sent to the tannery.

Most likely, your first deer hide will be pretty difficult if you try to do it yourself.

It is possible though. I learned on a roadkill raccoon and some roadkill rabbits and learned a lot, and am going to see if I can't do a deer this year.

Here's my version of a gong show hair on tanning session with the raccoon.
Keep in mind I didn't have a clue what I was doing, so there are a lot of mistakes, but there are also a lot of answers in there:

Remove as much tissue and fat as you can and apply a liberal (I even hate using that word) amount of rock salt. Available at any feed store ($12).
You can try to tan it yourself with alum/lye. ALOT of work, send it out, unless you are hardcore/ or cheap. ;)

I did my first deer hide by removing as much flesh and fat as I could and covering in a very generous amount of salt and letting it dry out, then I took it to the local fur tannery and it cost me $107 if I remember correct:)

I have done deer, bear, yotes, fox, coon, mink, otter, beaver, etc. The hard work is making the hide soft, if you only want to hang it that would save a lot of work but the hide would be hard. I use a sulfuric acid salt procedure. I find fine water softner salt works best for treating a hide because the fine salt can be spread over the hide as a paste covering all of the hide. If you want the solution you can PM me as you have to use care working with acid?
This it is a lot of timely work once you start, and not something you can leave stand and do later.

sorry saskgunowner for barging into ur post, but i was wondering if any of you can let me know tanners in calgary? u can pm me
