Not sure if this is the right subforum, but I've just got a quick question; I'm able to get a good deal on an old beater double barrel shotgun that has damage to the choke end on one barrel... Is it OK to chop the barrels down to ~18.5 inches and then chop the stock to a pistol grip, making sure the overall length is 26 inches in order to make a cool camping/bush gun

something like this?

^ I'm not worried about how it shoots/sounds. I just wanna make sure it's OK to do the modifications before I agree to the deal.

I have an 18.5 inch barrel and pistol grip that I put on my mossberg 500 every now and then, so I think it'll shoot much like that... which is total crap :)

having fired a full stocked gun but holding it with two hands and no shoulder contact i can tell you that opening lever is going to tear up your hand .try it before you cut the stock and see if it is what you really want .

Great, thanks for all the info. I'm gonna do it!

I'll leave a little extra on both ends just to be safe... Good tip about that lever, I'll wear some gloves when I test this out.

What you are contemplating is perfectly legal. The barrel length limit for chopping it is 457mm (17.99") and the OAL limit (measured parallel to the bore) is 660mm (25.98").

So, I did it: 18.5 inch barrel measured by dropping in a dowel until it hits the bottom, and measuring that. And just at 27" measured by placing barrels to the the wall and measuring from top of barrel to the floor .. so it's legal .. I wish it could be shorter, but no dice!

Range report: No need to hold with hand over... kickback isn't that bad at all. When you go for the double-trigger at once that kicks like a mule and you gotta watch out for the tang!

Naturally you can't hit sh1t at distance, but that's not the point. For anyone considering making one of these, it's a lot of fun to shoot, and it's now my new favorite bush gun... and we're not roughing it too bad ;)

I chopped a nice old Stevens SxS external hammer gun. The stock was too nice to cut, but the barrels were shortened. Then I mounted a rifle sight between the barrels...looks like an old-school
Big calibre safari double rifle. Shoots great too.

I don't think the watch is necessary in the picture. Anyone who sees that beauty is going to know what time it is. Hee hee. Can you post some more pictures?

^ Well you still have to hold it with two hands, hehe... I'll post some more pics in a week or so when I take it out next, as I can't wait... just horrible weather lately.

PS: I forgot to mention that I sanded down the wood and re-oiled it with motor oil from a 1971 Triumph Bonneville motor that I just finished rebuilding over the winter from the crank up... how cool is that ;)

A pistol grip only is totally useless on any shotgun. And you'll attract all kinds of unwanted LEO attention with a cut down shotgun like that. Regardless of its legality. 18" barrel with 26" OAL for a double/non-semi-auto.
However, the thing with doubles is that the barrels aren't necessarily connected via the rib over their whole length. The ribs aren't always metal either. Cutting 'em is a job for a smithy who knows how. It ain't a job for a hack saw.

It may be useless to you but it sounds like the OP is having fun with it, his double barrel hacksaw job seems to have worked out fine as he has fired it with no problems.
