Folks I am new to M1 Carbines and if you would be so kind to tell me what you can gleen from these photos. Questions I have, What type of rear sight is this (marked "Redding"), Should/can I replace it with the usual type, The barrel band has a "U" stamped on it, Is this the correct barrel band. Is this the right handguard, Why is there a rectangular hole in the guard, Is the chamber ring supposed to be painted or ground down, The barrel is 19" and what looks like a joint 2.5" from the muzzle, The front sight guard is marked "RIA"? There is a dark stain on the left side of the stock, do I have to refinish to remove said stain? The receiver is a Rock-Ola, and the receiver and bolt carrier numbers match. Any information would be appreciated.

Hate to tell you this but she is a bubba carbine

the rear sight is aftermarket the barrel is aftermarket or a orig GI thats now ruined with the extension the handguard is aftermarket probably plainfield machine Co

RIA is rock Island arsenal a postww2 probably korean war era or post sight its probably cast

every part will be stamped with letters look carefully and list them here

Contact, I figured it wasn't all original, I was looking for a shooter, so it isn't a big deal. I would like to replace the sight and handguard with proper ones. I thought the RIA was Rock Island, but couldn't find any info in the books I have. I am suprised how light the M1 is, I have an Erma 22 cal copy which is alot heavier. I should post a piccy of them together.

Thanks

Welcome to the carbine club!

Your gun is a reworked German re-import, with the German rear sight removed (positioned forward of the bolt). Barrel length was extended by sweating-on a piece of barrel (may or may not be legal as non-restricted, depending on who you ask).

The stock looks commercial to me. A complete strip and refinnish would improve the looks.

You also need a front sling-swivel.

Probably a good shooter, but I wouldn't waste time and money doing any sort of restoration (other than cleaning up the stock).

That rear sight sight looks like it will work very well and as the rifle isn't original anyway, why not leave it alone. The rectangular hole that has been cut into the upper handgaurd may have been done in an attempt to install a tangeant rear sight of some sort, but proved impossible because of the operating rod vicinity. bearhunter

DAMN you bubba!!! *stares at the sky, fists clenched* Whyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!

Too bad, like you said, its just going to be a shooter, don't bother with refurb, your money would be better spent finding a more USGI if that's what you want. That rear sight can't be fixed if that rear screw goes into the receiver, there will be an unsightly hole there that would in and of itself make it troublesome to 'restore'.

I find it disappointing that the german police stamping was removed, it would have been nice to see what group it was from.

But hey, its an M1 carbine, no matter how much poop he flung on to it. We have to be strong........

A gunsmith could melt off the rest of that silver solder and you could repark the receiver, BUT, it would still be bubba'd as the rear sight mount is serrated by the Germans.

I saw someone restore an Irwin Peters like that be welding over the serrations and re-profiling the top, then re-parking the whole receiver.

Probably not worth it.

Unless that rifle is BARGAIN priced, it has more value as parts than as a gun and I'd pass.

Plus, the receiver would have to be heat-treated again.
