i have just recently made the purchase of a 1889 in 30-30. I have not fired it yet but just from playing around with it i have realized the rear sight on it (bubba sight) is the most god awful thing i have ever seen on a rifle. this rifle is a complete bubba it has a 20 inch barrel. From what i hear its a common conversion for this rifle. since i dont think theres anyway to bring it remotely close to a military config. im wondering what i can do or what could be done to it my gunsmithing skill are 0.
One posible thing i would like to do is turn it into a scout rifle. Is it posible to tap on an eye relief scope?
If not is it people to change the rear iron sight on it to make it better?
Im not planning to get rid of it so worst case senario its going to be a cheap plinker
Im not for bubba'ing milsurps but since its too late for this one would like to pimp it like a cheap SKS lol

Fly at it and have fun with it.

I've owned a couple of those and liked every one of them.

At present time I have only one and it honestly shoots more accurately than I can hold it, with selected hand loads.

It will shoot any factory ammo into less than 3 inches at 100 yards. Some even less that 2 inches. It will shoot 150 grain Hornady flat nose under 2 inches on a regular basis, as long as I do my part.

I have always wanted to mount a scope on it but never have really felt a need to.

Maybe this spring will bring out the need. It is a great little, well handling rifle for spring bears at ranges under 200 yards.
