Anyone ever reloaded for this Schmidt Rubin 1889 7.5 x 53.5mm ? I slugged my bore: bore=.296" and groove=.3071". Reformed win 284 brass. I don't have any load data info cause most data is for the more modern and stronger K31 model.
Any info at this point would be more than welcomed.
Thanks

schmidt rubin 1889 puzzle

hi,tried this maybe that could help.

I'll study what the other guys wrote about it but I am sure happy to see I am not the only confused reloader with this rifle's chamber problem.

This schmidt rubin 1889 sure is a chalenge. Did a chamber cast and slugged the bore. chamber neck is .347" with a long freebore (my cast went to almost an inch past the chamber neck mark and still no rifling ! bore is .296" and groove is .3071". I did paper patching before according to Paul Matthews technique that when using smokeless powder, unpayched bullet should be equal to or at .0005" larger than bore maximum which in this case would be .2965" max. And according to Matthews again, I would patch it up to groove size but even so, it wouldn't be enough to fill suxh a chamber neck O.D. minus about .003" for clearance. My reformed 284 neck and resized with 7.5 x 55 Lee sizing die is .335" and .014" thick so .335-(.014" x 2)=.335-.28"=.307" patched bullet BUT chamber neck od (.347") - case od (.335)" gives a clearance of .012" which is way too much and would likely give gas blowback. Plus, imagine the bullet travelling in this long taper freebore (from .331" just ahead of chamber neck mark tapering down to .312" .8" down the bore and not reached the rifling yet !). I don't know about this Mr. Rubin anymore. what was he thinking, I'd like to know.
If anyone paper patched bullets before for this rifle, i'd be curious to know the unpatched and patched bullet diameters they used and how well it worked out...

Thanks to 84mmcarl-gustav and diopter for your helpfull references. I'll do my homework now.

What powders do you have?
Cast, or jacketed bullets?

My fast and quick load is 35gr H4895 in full length and annealed 7.5x55 cases, with 178gr Amax bullets, Win. primers. Works surprising well, and I don't waste precious time reloading
A friend of mine who prefers shooting cast, wraps 3 layers of alum window tape around the neck to prevent blowback.

So the 1889 Schmidt rubin can handle jacketed bullets? I was looking for a load that preforms like the original. I have both jacketed and cast .308 bullets (150-168grn)
