So I'm new to long range and have a couple bits and pieces on their way in.
The longest range near me is 600 yards, so that is what I have to work with. Not long range compared to what some of you guys are capable of, but for comparisons sake the longest shot I've taken on game is 278 yards, and it sure wasn't easy, even against a still target.
So I decided to buy an SPS Tactical since the gun has some favourable reviews (stock notwithstanding) in .223 since I'm loading for it already and have tons of practice ammo. I also like the 1:9 twist for 75 and under match loads over the SPS Varmint 1:12.
Since I'm on a budget and just starting out I went with a shrubnell Elite. Was considering the 10x but it was mentioned that parallax might be an issue when stretching it out, so I got the 5x15 with adjustable objective. It's certainly as clear as other scopes I own and if I stick to LR and outgrow it, I think I'll put it on a walking varminter
I ordered an EGW base for it, 20 MOA. I understand it may need to be bedded if it doesn't fit flush so that it doesn't put stress on the glass or put anything out of alignment.
The scope is listed as having 40 MOA of adjustment. I've heard 50 is the actual number, but the literature I found says otherwise so I'll err on the side of caution.
The Winchester white box ammo I have lists 13.8 MOA elevation required on a 100 yard zero to hit dead on at 600 according to iSnipe.
Do I even need the 20 MOA base to hit out to 600 in this case? Or am I getting insurance in case I need significant scope adjustment to zero at 100?
I'm particularly afraid of being unable to zero at 100 due to bottoming out while compensating for the 20 MOA base more so than having enough additional MOA to hit at 1000 which I simply can't see myself doing without serious trigger time.
