so i have been thinking one of my next guns will be a dedicated slug gun. I don't really know anything about them:confused: rifled barrell vs smooth bore. break action vs bolt action. feel free to discuss all sizes of shells (2 3/4 and bigger)


i think i want a break action single shot with a barrell under 30" and a 3.5" chamber is it possible to re-chamber an older shotgun safely?
 
I prefer a smooth bore for my slug shooting. It is a versatile choice if you intend to shoot buck shot and bird shot in addition to slugs. The slug known as Brenneke produces the best accuracy out of my smooth bores. I think the 3.5" 12 bore shells would produce too much pressure for most currently non 3.5" chambered single shot guns. The reaming required would likely thin the barrel too much in critical areas. I think a NEF single shot 12 bore with a 28" barrel would serve you well. It is chambered in 3" and is smooth bored. Any smith could sweat on a set of Williams open sights for a reasonable cost.(if required) NEF also makes a slug gun with sights and smooth bore barrel for a very reasonable cost. The only drawback I can see is that with slugs the recoil of a single shot (light weight) shotgun would be noticeable to say the least. I hope others chime in with choices and ideas. Good thread.

rifled slug barrels provide greater accuracy at longer distances with saboted slugs, as far as the rest of it goes theres a fellow on biggamehunt.net that has built some very impressive guns you'd be best off contacting him, his screen name is hubel 458.
