My dad had a Schultz and Larsen M68 DL in 243 Winchester that I inherited when he passed away years ago. The rifle came to me disassembled and I would now like to put it back together, but I have a problem, the magazine box is missing. I still have the magazine spring, cartridge follower and bottom metal. I had Corlanes look for a magazine box but they could not find one, so I am now thinking I could make or alter one. My next problem is that I can't find any information on the dimensions of the box so I am hoping someone on Gunnutz could help me out with providing me the dimensions and a few photos of a SL for a 243/308 Winchester length cartridge. Also, I would like to know if there is a spacer in the magazine box to accommodate the short cartridge since I think the S&L only came in a long action length. Thanks in advance.

🥲

I would go through every box, drawer and tool box where this rifle came from.
Condolences on the passing of your father and hope you can resurrect this old beauty.

Edit to note: find out whether S & L used a long action only.
I do have one in 7mm mag I could take apart and do some measurements.
It might be easier to find a long action mag box than short.
Should be easy ‘nuff to make a spacer for it.

There is a firearms supply house in Denmark that carries many parts for the older Schultz & Larsen rifles of the rear-locking 1960s vintage, including the M68DL. It is Hunters House:

Website: https://huntershouse-dk.translate.goog/?_x_tr_sl=da&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=sc.

Their website is a little challenging to navigate, but they can be reached at the email address provided in the link above. (I've done so in the past.) I know that many S&L owners have been able to source parts for their rifles from them.

As for whether Schultz & Larsen had varying action lengths, they didn't--just the one long action. Magazine length (unblocked) is 3.40 in.

You have one of the finest bolt-action rifles ever made, Goldeneye. I can't think of another factory rifle with the same superb build quality, action strength, and fit & finish. If you plan to use factory ammunition only, you'll have no problems with it. On the other hand, if you handload, you need to aware of the brass stretching that occurs with all rear-locking actions and depart slightly from the usual handloading practices to get reasonable brass life. This is a whole topic on its own, however, and can be discussed some other time.

Lots haas happened behind the scene South Pender since the start of this thread.

I was hoping Goldeneye would update it with photos.

Cheers

Thanks to Kamlooky for helping me out with some measurements, drawings and photos and thanks for the information South Pender. Every bit of information helps. I rummaged through my parts and found a box that was the right contour for the follower, but the other dimensions were off so I did a bunch of filing, cutting and adding of flat bar to put a block at the front of the box to make a 2.88" opening for the follower and another flat bar to make the box just over 3.4". The box works and the cartridges feed well. Thanks again to both of you for sharing information. Much appreciated. I have tried to attach a few photos, hopefully they work.
