I am hoping to get to the range this wednesday, and am putting a scope adjustment card together first. My scope is a Leupold MK4 6.5 - 20x with mil dots and 1/4 MOA adjustment per click. Here is what I plan to use for range adjustment with the elevation. Can you guys look it over and see if I'm right out to lunch?

100 yds, 4 clicks
200 yds, 8 clicks
300 yds, 12 clicks
400 yds, 16 clicks
500 yds, 20 clicks
600 yds, 24 clicks
700 yds, 28 clicks
800 yds, 32 clicks
900 yds, 36 clicks
1000 yds, 40 clicks

Caliber, barrel length, bullet weight, muzzle velocity, zero range? Need to know all this in order to create a range card. I have no idea what you are doing? All load info and range conditions ar also a factor. But as a simple guide at least the caliber, bullet weight, muzzle velocity and zero range are needed.

First you want to set your zero at whatever range you decide will be about your closest range. ie 100 yard is zero on the turrets or maybe 300 yards is the closest you plan to ever shoot, zero on the turrets would be your 300 yards zero. Never mind counting clicks, you want to come up in MOA. Learn how to read the barrel and scales on the scope, your life will be much easier. If I see guys counting clicks, I always ask the what their phone number is:D this is a sure way to make them lose track.
You will need to get a ballistics chart to under stand ballistics better. By the looks of how I am reading your range card you are coming up 40 click from some unknown zero (end of barrel?) point to 1000 yards. 40 clicks devided by 1/4 minute will be 10 minutes of angle. If you only need 10 MOA to get to 1000 yards you have the flatest shooting rifle I have ever seen.

My rifle is a Remington 700 police .308, 26" barrel. I'll be firing Federal 168gr HPBT .308 Gold Medal Match ammo. All the information i have read about barrel adjustments for elevation gets me more confused. I was told by a friend to try zeroing at 300 meters and go from there, another friend said to try 400 meters instead? Unfortunately the booklet that came with my Leupold scope wasn't very helpful in explaining how to preform corrections and adjustments. I'm still surfing the net for a really really easy explanation of how to do this, but haven't found it yet. This brings me to yet another question, I have noticed that the majority of shooting info is in yards, do you guys use yards or meters?

Use this for range adjustment, assuming 168 grain Sierra at 2700 fps. 100 yards is your ZERO.

200 - 2 moa(8 clicks)
300 - 4.75 moa(19 clicks)
400 - 8 moa(32 clicks)
500 - 11.5 moa(46 clicks)
600 - 16 moa(64 clicks)
700 - 20 moa(80 clicks)
800 - 25 moa(100 clicks)
900 - 31 moa(124 clicks)
1000-38 moa(153 clicks)

However, somewhere around 900 yards your groups will become unacceptably large because your bullet is entering the transonic zone. Also because your scope only has 70 minutes of vertical adjustment, it is near the end of its travel which is not as accurate as when the adjustment is near the middle. Remember when you sight in your rifle at 100 yards with a 0 moa base the scope will be optically centered. That means you only have about 35 moa to use for long range shooting.

Solution - don't shoot 168's beyond 800 yards, or switch to a bullet with more speed and/or more ballistic coefficient.
- use a 20 moa base or Burris offset rings to allow the longer ranges to remain near the middle of the adjustment range.

Hope this helps.

Looks like some good info Terry, thanks for the tips! My scope is mounted on a 20 MOA Warne rail, so hopefully i will have enough elevation to reach out to those longer distances. I am hoping to head over to the range with the base rifle club this Wednesday if they are meeting, and try my rifle out. Eventually I would like to reach out to 1000 yds, after I get lots of practice. What do shooters use to go out that far with .308's? I know the US Army uses 175 gr bullets, but would something lighter be better instead?

Your 20 moa base and the Leupold M4 should do just fine. For long range I would recommend 175 SMK's at 2700fps minimum or 154 Lapua Scenars at 2850fps. Hell, for short range I'd recommend the same bullets.
