Hi Everyone, I just recently purchased a remington 5R mainly for long distance shooting (1000 meters + ) in mind and just looking into what kinda of glass i should put on it. I had my eye on a Leupold Mark 4 8.5-25x50mm LR/T M1 Illum. But a few guys at a near by gun club are suggesting a bushnell 6500 elite cause it is more affordable . I was just wondering price aside what would you guys suggest?

I wouldn't waste my money on a Leupold. Leupold makes an excellent scope, but in Canada you will pay close to 2x the price of what American's pay. This is robbery and I don't care what anyone says- and yes I've seen all the past threads on this topic. However, it's your money...

I bought a Sightron III from Mystic Precision for my 5R. Price was excellent (very competitive to American prices) and the glass is great. Plus, Sightron has a similar warranty to Leupold- which is why I went with them. I am very happy with the scope so far.

Do you know if there are any restrictions on importing a scope from the states? or would there just be duty to pay?

I'm looking to go the same route as the OP. I live part time in Seattle and seeing as money is on par am looking at getting glass stateside.

I too am looking for a scope for 900m shots. I will be mounting it on a remington xcr tactical long range. Any advise on power? I have been looking at the different Leupold Mark 4's not sure which power to go with. I am also looking at bushnell 4200 and 6500's does any one have any experience with this scopes? For the extra money with the Leupold what will I be getting that I wont with the bushnell? Will the bushnell still put me out to 900m shots?

Thanks

I'd say a 3.5-10x Mark 4 as well.
Yes, nice scope. M3 for the field, m1 if you want to shoot tac. The one I have is currently on an AR.

Once scope that is far too often overlooked is the Mark 4 4.5-14x40mm LR/T Target IMO. nice and bright. fine cross hairs. 40mm to keep the weight down. Realy good scope if you want to combine a field gun with a target gun. I have been running one on my hunting/target LTR for about a year.

If you don't want to carry the gun ever, get a nightforce 3.5-15. It sits in a box at the moment. :(

I shot a 6500 for quite a while and only upgraded to a NF to keep up appearances. it worked great and did not hold me back any more than lack of skill did. Ive been shooting out to 600m matches so far.

Or, like the man said on The 13th Warrior "Grow stronger!"

Yeah, that is all fine and good. The packing a heavy gun around, then having to pack a heavy gun + meat back thing is where it sucks. Honestly, if I thought that the NF gave me any real advantage over the 4.5-14x40mm LR/T in the hills I hunt, I'd swap it out today. The only advantage that I've found of the NF 50mm over the MK4 40mm is in the 2x5min of huntable twilight. That to the disadvantage of the pound difference says Leo stays on the gun.

Of course, next time you are in the calgary area, you can bring your heavy gear, and we can race through the trails if you like.:p

Short answer is NO.

Check threads in Legalese section. Been covered many times. Canada as no problems with you IMPORTING, however you MUST have US EXPORT permit. Only a US registered exporter can apply for the permit.

If you are caught exporting a scope (controlled military item under ITAR), among other things, you will be banned for life ever entering the US.
