scope and info for a 17 hmr

I just bought my first 17 hmr a Marlin 917vr, what is the maximum effective range for that caliber (target shooting only), how much power is best for this caliber, 9, 14, 24, 30? And how much elevation, 40 moa enough? Thanks.

I've only ever shot my Marlin917v up to 100yards with a BSA sweet 17 scope. Accuracy would have been better if I had more practice.

I shot 21 shots and landed all of them inside of the 4 gray squares for the center. 4 inches squared.

I plan to go out again soon and do better, I was a little rushed by my guest last time.

I have a Marlin and all I use is a leopold 3-9 variable obj and works fine, I very seldom use the higher powers on hot days so see no need in a bigger scope.

I have a 5-15 Browning on mine, use the 15 at the range and 5 in the field. You have to have a breeze free day to get any kind of groups at 200 yards, IMHO. FS
