Scope and mounting advice for new Vanguard?

Just picked up a Weatherby Lazerguard in .300 Wby the other day, now I'm trying to decide what mounting system and scope to use. Right now I'm leaning towards the Talley one piece mounts, but I'm unsure what height I'll need. As for the scope, I'd like something with close to 4" of eye relief, max magnification of 12x or more, and around $500. So far I'm considering a Nikon Monarch 3 3-12x42mm and the Weaver Super Slam 3-15x50mm. The Weaver is on sale at Cabela's and would seem like the better deal, but I haven't heard much of anything about these scopes.

If anybody's got advice or recommendations I'd be happy to read it, thanks.
 
If your thinking about spending $500ish on a scope, you can get a really nice zeiss conquest or Leupold (lifetime warranty) if your willing to go with a 9X scope instead of 12X, i have seen the conquest on here a couple times as low as $425, but often around the $500 mark. Both are much better scopes for the money compared to the nikon or weaver IMO. I own all three and my nikon isnt even mounted on anything right now.. Also keep your eyes out for a Meopta, these things are awesome, I just picked one up around your price range mind you its also 3-9X40 as well but thats what I like to shoot and you can get much better glass for the money if you get a less power scope sometimes. If you want to get a 50mm objective I wouldnt go any lower then "medium" talleys on the lazerguard if its anything like the vanguard S2, just put a set of "low" talleys on an S2 with 3-9x40 scope, theres enough clearance but a 50mm would be pushing it. Awesome choice of mounts BTW. I have heard great things about the super slam but personally havnt even had the chance to touch one.

By "here" do you mean the EE, or is there a sponsor that carries them for that price? I'm assuming you mean the old Zeiss Conquests, the new HD5 ones seem to be around $1000. I'm pretty set on higher than 9x magnification anyway, I figure it'll be handy to have the extra magnification to take advantage of the .300 Wby's power. Leupold is also an option I suppose, although I think I'd rather have a scope with constant eye relief. I've heard good things about Meopta but they seem to be pretty rare, most of the websites I've been looking through don't carry much of a selection if they have any at all. Where did you buy yours, if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks for the information on the Talley mounts, glad to hear that they're a good choice. I've normally just used Weaver bases in the past, but I've been hearing good things about the Talleys and figured they would be a good choice for the Vanguard.
 
I buy everything on "here" and by that I mean CGN.
I find if your patient it will eventually show up and everyone is great to deal with, try a WTB ad in the Equipment Exchange, people are very helpful and will sometimes recommend a dealer or someone that they know has what your looking for.
I got the Meopta on this site in the EE section, its comparible to my conquest. Oh and yea I was talking about the older conquests, which are still awesome scopes.
 
I'd call Richard Near for a mounting solution for your 300wby he makes the best mounts, rails, rings, etc I have used yet. They are pricey but well worth the money

I agree, awesome stuff. A bit pricey, but for the horse power that 300 Weatherby is packing, I would want a serious set of mounts and rings and his are the best. Buy once, cry once.
 
Took a look at Richard Near's website. They look like solid mounts but a bit more than I'm willing want to pay right now, will have to keep him in mind for the future though.

I ended up ordering the Talley one piece mounts and Weaver Super Slam 3-15x50, I saw nothing but good reviews after searching the internet for a while so hopefully it'll work out nicely. Thanks to all who replied.
