I just stripped the screw that holds the peep sight on the peep sight body of my old Marlin 81DL. The shaft of the large headed screw is surprisingly narrow and I just accidently over torqued it. I will get it repaired but at the same time will probably get the receiver drilled and tapped for a scope. I have been reading about some of you guys wringing good accuracy out of these old Marlins.
I'd like some recomendations as to how to move forward on this. I will get a gunsmith to do the work.
Is it best to drill/tap and then screw on a weaver base mount or just drill it for a specific set of rings? What would be most secure?
Suggestions for mounts or rings would be appreciated.
I plan on target shooting to 150 yards with it plus the occassional rabbit/chicken hunt. What would be a good scope in the $300 range?
Many thanks for any help or thoughts.
