Can I buy an aftermarket scope and mounts for my O3 spingfield that would be in keeping with military issue? Will it die and tap decrease value? Can I get a scope on it without die and tap?

Drilling and tapping WILL DESTROY the collector interest/value of your rifle. Both S&K and B square market a no drill mount for the M1903 and M1903A3 Springfield.I have not used these, but have used the S&K no drill mounts for the P14/M1917 Enfield and No4/5 Lee Enfield. If you do go into a sporter project with a drill/tap mount you must also alter the bolt handle to clear the scope and you must employ an after market safety.18 yrs ago I took a sound, but somewhat pitted, Springfield action and built a nice sporter on it.This involved shortening and re-crowning the barrel, polishing and re-blueing the unit, altering the bolt handle, installing an after market safety and trigger guard with hinged floorplate, drilling and tapping the receiver(these are tough buggers to work with),and fitting a sporter stock with monte-carlo comb.It is a smooth and accurate hunting rifle, but when all is said and done I could have had an off the shelf Rem 700 for the same price.I did it as a project and because I always wanted a Springfield sporter. The action I used had no collector appeal, but was a strong and servicable Remington variant.

Redfield still makes the one piece bridge mount that was used on the 1903A4. However, drilling and tapping a rifle that is in full military configuration will drop its value by at least half.

A couple of months ago I read an article by Mike Venturino, the gun writer , where he put a scope on one of his 1903's.
A company in the U.S. imports replica sniper scopes & mounts that turn it into " as issued " sniper rifle.

Not 100% but close to it. I can look up the magazine article if you want names etc.

If you can dig up the issue I will aquire one.

"...that turn it into "as issued" sniper rifle..." Not exactly 'as issued'. It'd still be a bubba'd rifle with a far lower value than a stock 1903A3.
'03A4's were made only by Remington with 'select' barrels. No iron sights were ever installed, but the key was cut for the front sight.

If you're dead set on a military springfield, then unless you have the exact style of springfield used for the snipers, you're looking at reducing the value by half the MINUTE that you touch it with a drill. Seems that could be too nice a gun to do that to.

You may want to look into selling it so that you can buy the right gun, with scope.

Of course, it is your gun, but be aware of the fact that it will be worth a lot less, and cost you a lot more, doing it this way.
