Hi,

So I was one of the new guys at the ORA shoot at Mons this weekend... I had a great time... 500yds... 600 yds... no problem... even the rain didn't get me down too much... My Savage .223 made it to 900yds... but I had to dial my scope all the way up and then aim at the top of the target number board (the one on the top of the birm) in order to hit the target... by the time we got to 1000yds... I couldn't find the target because I didn't have anything I could aim at... except the clouds!!!

So I am looking for a 20 MOA base!

I hear that one piece bases are better than 2 piece bases (is this true)... and have a few questions...

First, What is the difference between picatiny and weaver bases? Will all rings work on both?

Second... any recommendations on a base? Warne vs Farrel vs Weaver

Right now I have Burris rings (not the ones with the inserts) with a 2-piece base (also Burris)... and the scope is a Bushnell 4200 6-24x50 Tactical with 30mm tube...

Thanks for your help... hopefully I'll make it to the next practice day with a new base/rings... and be able to play with all the big boys!

Hi,

I hear that one piece bases are better than 2 piece bases (is this true).

I also hear that Hillary Clinton would make a good president.

I also hear that .308 is better than .30-06,
and that AR-15s are better than AK-47s,
and that 9mm GLOCKs are better than .45 1911s,
and that semi is better than bolt,
and that evolution is a sham,
and that Mozart sucked,
and....
Starbucks is better than Timmy's?

EGW least expensive and works well but finish is not as durable as...

Farrell, more money. Very well built but taller then above. I use both.

Pic and Weaver are pretty close in size. The Burris rings, by design, will mount on either.

Get the 30mm Rings with inserts and you can save the money on the base.

Or use both and have more up to go further :)

Congrats on reaching out with your 223. It is way too much fun for such a small case. I love mine.

Jerry

PS Timmy's is better then Starbucks.

Don't count on picatinny rings fitting on a weaver base, but weaver rings will fit on picatinny bases. I have the Farrel one piece base in steel on my Savage and I think it is decent. If you epoxy bed it onto your receiver you will have minimized the problems that could occur with two piece bases not aligning the rings properly. Burris rings with the plastic inserts (the Custom signature Zees) will further eliminate problems with alignment of rings and also allow for offset inserts to build more elevation into the rifle without cranking the scope adjustment to its max.

i run an egw base on my precision gun.
25MOA picitiny for the savage long action. think it was $65 with shipping to my door direct from EGW

20 moa is good enough at 1000 yds.
One piece base is the best. As two peice base will pressure the scope
tube. Your rings have to sit at the required angle. Not just rings alone
as in two piece or Burris sig. Those work great on light calibre an smaller
needed moa change. They are fix when you can't get it correct.

rings and mounts

Don't cheap out for bargin equipment. What ever you buy make sure it a quality piece so's you won't be replacing it all the time. It's better to buy One cadillac than 3 chevy's.

I've liked using the warne bases, untill recently i had a 20 min. warne with Badger rings on top. I just switched to a flat warne and a 1 piece Nightforce ring/mount combo piece.

Make sure you align your rings properly and LAP THE RINGS IN. Beg , borrow, or steal a lapping kit and do it right.

M.
