Scope Decision - Advice Needed

Howdy.

I'm just starting into precision shooting and I am hoping for a little advice on what I should be looking at.

My home range, and the other one I have access to, have distances of 100 to just over 300 yards.

I am the proud owner of a Savage 10FP in .223 and I have already had the standard stock glass bedded until I can upgrade sometime next season.

At the moment, with a few firearm restoration projects on the go, cost is a considerable factor.

A knowledgable friend has recommended the Bushnell Legend 5-15x40 as a nice compromise between quality and cost.

Another consideration is picking up a used scope from a fellow G-Nutter. But I understand a few bumps can screw up a scope.

I'd appreciate hearing anyone's two cents worth.

You didn't mention which Precision discipline you were interested in so I will try and cover the 2 you may be thinking of.

I have worked my way up from a cheapo Barska 6.5-20x50 through Bushnell Banner 6-18x42 series onwards with Bushnell 4200 6-24x50 Tactical Mildot and awaiting the receipt of my used Nightforce 5.5-22x56 from a fellow nutter, which will be here Monday.

This is all within 4 months. Trust me when I say, and you will hear from more than just me, Buy the best you can afford it will be cheaper in the long run.

If you want to be shooting F-Class or Benchrest style 300m then you will need at Minimum either a 1/4MOA (1/8MOA would be better) Target dot, or a super fine crosshair. (Leupold and Nightforce are the 2 you would be looking at here although there is a Bushnell 8-32x40 that has a 1/4 MOA Dot in the $600 range at WSS you might take a look at)

There is a Leupold on the EE right now that I was contemplating with a Leupold Target Dot (1/4 MOA) but would have to send it in to have Target Turrets installed for another $160ish on top of the scope cost.

If you want to shoot Tactical Style precision then talk to CyberK on the board here about his Falcon scopes, they have been getting really good reviews from others on the board here and the prices are very reasonable.

You will be looking at anywhere from $550-$900 for a good precision shooting scope depending on which discipline you opt for.

The scope I am waiting for does not have the reticle that I truly wanted but I do know it will be sufficient for my needs.

If you buy a used scope and are worried about getting a lemon ask the seller if they will agree to a 3 day inspection period so that you can check it out and send it back if it is not working as they said it was.

Cost being a considerable factor, I'd go with either a 10 or 16xSuperSniper if there's one in the EE, or better yet get a 10x Menace or 4.5-14x Merlin from CyberK. Any of those choices would be 400 bucks-ish. Bushnell legend would probably be alright too (and a little cheaper at $234), but doesn't have target knobs which you're likely going to want.
Used a 10xSS yesterday from 1-300yds it got good hits reliably, and from what I hear the Falcon scopes are excellent value for the money as well (the owner of the 10xSS has a 10xMenace as well).
I've bought 6 or so scopes off guys here and have had nothing but good experiences. No one I've dealt with yet has misrepresented their scope, if they said it was almost mint -that's been what I ended up getting.

Don't get so hung up on having a new scope that you pass up a high quality used scope at a reasonable price. I managed to pick up a high end scope for 30% less than new earlier this summer - and it came with mounts! (Thanks Wolverine!) A brand new version of the same scope would of been simply unmanageable. Shop around, you might be surprised.
 
Cyanide alludes to it... It takes a wealthy man to buy a cheap scope. You can have the best tack driver in the world, but if you have crap for a scope, you may as well throw rocks instead. You will quickly become frustrated with a cheap scope and spend more money until you get it right. Why not just do it right the first time?

Depending on your budget the nikon buckmaster or if you can find one,a weaver v16 can be had new for about 4c.If you are limiting yourself to 300 yards as a max.distance the bushnell 10x40 would be a better choice than the legend and not muchmore money,or save for a few more months and get a leopold vx11.
 
Nothing wrong with the 3200 10x scope or the 4200 6-24 (other than the lack of vertical adjustment in the 6-24x). Whiel it makes more sense to buy a good scope, there's always people looking for a deal on a used moderately priced scope.

And if you deal with reputable guys on the EE you shouldn't have a problem with getting damaged goods.
