Scope decision on a 4-16 x 42

So I’ve been looking to replace the scope on my 222 REM Mag as it has an old Tasco 3-9 from who knows when. Likely the 70’s but who knows. In any case, I was thinking I might upgrade to something like a 4-16 x 42. It’s mostly going to be used for varmints and target shooting out to 350 yards. I was thinking of picking up the Vortex Diamondback that was on sale at Cabelas but then saw there was a Crimson Trace Hardline 4-16 x 42 as well as a Burris Droptine 4.5-14 x 42. Of these 3, which would be the best option as they are all in the sub $500 range with the sale prices?

Riton Primal 1 4-16 x 45. I put one of these on my 6.5 x 55 a few years ago; love it; bright and clear and in your price range. Also not too heavy. Tracking is 100% repeatable.

Check out local shop or one of the sponsors here before you pull the trigger on anything at Cabela’s. I like supporting local. I get great deals at my local store.

Are you set on the 42mm objective? I threw a 3-12 Burris Fullfield IV on a 22LR gopher gun, and it's surprisingly decent for what it cost. I've found Burris' lower end lines to be better than comparable Vortex, usually for less money. The 4-16x50 Fullfield IV is on for less than $500 at a couple places right now.

Just a thought - I have a Covenant-4 6-24 x 50 on a couple 22LR rifles and I feel this gives more accuracy - 'Aim Small - ...'. On my Sav B-22 FV I have Vortex Pro LOW rings and have ca 1/32" clearance on the front bell. And on my Ruger American .223 I have a Bush-Engage 6-18x50 with similar clearance. No probs for several years and 'near-MOA' with both rifles.

Of those 3 I would go with the Burris. - dan

If you are okay with moving to a taller ring, Cabela's has the Burris Fullfield IV 4-16x50mm on sale right now for under $500. Simple E3 "BDC-style" reticle for quick holdovers at maximum power.

I feel the Diamondbacks have a tight eyebox. Fullfield IVs are a bit more relaxed. No experience with the Crimson Trace so won't recommend.

Wow, that is indeed some tight clearance. I’m pretty sure mine would be like that with a 42 mm objective.

I have old style Sako rings that are a medium height. I’ve been looking but can’t find any high rings for it.

The clearance is 'snug' but not consequential for these rifles. The B22 is Varmint profile so a bit tighter than the .223 but unless you feel your rifle barrel is going to 'vibrate' significantly so close to the action, ' a 32nd is as good as a mile' AND you get closer to the plane of the bore. Plus I get a better cheek weld with a lower scope.

The Diamond Back wouldn’t be on my list.
Had one and at the top end was like looking thru a fish bowl.

I’ve got a Weaver Classic on my T-3 and it fits the criteria for that 223.
