Scope Decisions and Questions

Hi guys,

I've recently picked up my first .308 and I am mainly using it for target shooting and hunting. I am having a bit of difficulty deciding on a scope to mount on it. My price range is $850-$1100. I would like something in the 6-24 X 50 arena which also features tactical turrets. I've managed to narrow down my choices to something from the tactical lines from Bushnell or Vortex. However, I noticed that there seems to be some of controversy around Vortex products (mainly with people frequently needing to utilize its warranty) and I was wondering what the actual story is behind this company and their products? I am quite interested in the Viper PST 6-24 X 50, but I'm a bit hesitant in investing in an optic that may not be the most reliable.

I could really use some help here, and please feel free to educate me about any other companies or scope models I should be looking into.

Thank you very much for taking the time to help me out!

I'll chime in...

6x is too much magnification for hunting if you are in any bush, although out in the open it would be fine.

I recently picked up a couple Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 scopes. Plenty of magnification for most hunting applications...

If I were you, because you're going to use the gun for hunting, look for something in the 2.5, 3 or maybe 4 power on the low end of the magnification...

Maybe a scope in 4-16...

Cheers
Jay

Agreed that a 6-24 is too much for hunting. Depending on the ranged you're planning on shooting at, a 4-16 may be good, a 2.5-10 would probably be best. By the time you need much more than 10x magnification, the rifle will usually be too heavy and bulky for hunting.

I'd be tempted to look at something in the 3-15x range for a combination hunting/target scope personally.
