I just purhased a Marlin xt in 17 HMR. I need a scope for it. The purpose for the gun is hunting first, then paper killing with kids. Because I have 3 kids that shoot I do not have alot of extra to spend on the scope. Any sujestions?

I looked at Bass Pro, Nikon Prostaff on sale?
Or Bushnell Legend 4.5x14?

Thx Tiny :50cal:

Go with at least 12X or 14X. Much better for the tiny targets you might be shooting at the distances the .17 is capable of.

I have a Bushnell Banner 6-24x40 on 3 of my rifles, they run about $130 and are pretty decent for the price and seem to work quite well on my .223, .22WMR and .17HMR....

Given the ability to easily shoot past 100 yards with the 17HMR, an adjustable objective is almost a must. If you've got an accurate rifle, with an accurate caliber, you need an equally capable scope. Around Christmas amazon.ca had very competitive prices on Bushnell optics. 4-12 or 5-15 is just about right. A 40mm scope with AO will run you around 350-450. Also, a scope designed for 22LR should not be used on the HMR.

I got a nikon prostaff 4-12 on my 22wmr was $200. Vortex diamondback 4-12 also $200. Very nice scopes for that price. I currently have a vortex viper 3-9 for my hmr but that was a little more then the others

I agree, shooting a 17HMR you will get shots from 5 yards to 150 yards. Any scope with magnification to hit gophers at 150 will be out of focus at 5 if you don't have adjustable focus. Mine is a Tasco Target/Varmint 6-24x42, it was just over $100 a few years ago. Not fancy glass but it works just fine.

If you cant hit a gopher at 5 yards with it being out of focus you have some problems besides the scope. No problems with any of my scopes from a few feet away to 100+ with 3-9 and parallax at 100 yards. When you have seconds to find and shoot the gopher adjusting a bunch of knobs doesnt work.

Don't rule out fixed power 10x, 16x's or others, even less playing with knobs in hunting situations.

As others have stated, as much magnification as your budget allows. I have a 6.5-20 and it is never set below 20 when shooting.

The scopes I was looking at for my 17, werethe Vortex CF II 6-18x44, Mueller AVP & APT, Hawke Varmint 4-16x44 and the Bushnell Legend Utra HD 4-14x44. I got the Hawke.

Dont know if those fit your budget or not...

For inexpensive (but quality) scopes I go with Mueller APV or Hawke Varmint SF... to get the most out of your Hummer you will want at least 14X, 16X is better and for really small groups at 100+ yards, you will want 24X... the trick is, if you will also use it hunting, you don't want too much magnification on the low end of the zoom range... 4-16X maybe your best compromise... I would recommend the Hawke Varmint SF in 4-16X44mm... link below;

The 17 HMR is incredible for a rimfire! I was out the other day with winds gusting over 25 kmh. I gave up grouping as the wind was knocking them about a bit even though it was comming from six o'clock. Just for jollies I took my steel target out to 300m. I'd forgot the drop at that range so I fired 20 or so shots before I saw a hit on the ground. Next shot hit the 3 1/2" plate. Knocked the dam thing over!!!! at 300m. It was sitting on rock and a little wobbley, but the wind didn't take it down a 17gr V-Max did.

My point get a 4-14X40 (better still 44 or 50). More than that in a cheap scope may not be useable except on a nice bright day. I had a 3200 Bushnell 3-9X50 that would have been perfect for this cartridge, too bad I traded it.
