Ok, I haven't looked through many scopes in my life, not any good ones anyway.

I am looking for recommendations for a scope up to about $350 or so for a Savage 17 HMR - thoughts?

I'd like to shoot out to 150 plus yards and touch a gopher, but some of the scopes I have looked through just about blank out the gopher at that range, ie, the crosshairs are thicker than the critter.

I also do not know the terminology for the different reticles/crosshairs available, but I kinda like the ones that have the elevation markings on them.

Am thinking Bushnell to get down to my price range ?, but what reticle and what power to shoot as far out as practical with this gun on gopher sized targets ?

Any help is much apreciated.

For your application, try a Bushnell Elite 3200 4x-12x -40mm or 5x-15x - 40mm. Those should fall into that price range. Or if you want to spend more, try the 4200 series. Good mix of high magnification, but low enough to find and shoot them at <30 yds.

Also on the reticles, you may be able to get those scope with the tick marks you like. Those are called mildots, usually 4 dots on each line. Or BDC (Bullet drop compensator), which has 3 or 4 lines on the bottom line only.

Btw don't buy a tasco. I did and its the worst thing ever. You'd be better off putting a paper towel tube on your gun.
