Very shortly I am about to pick up my latest build from the gunsmith. It is a .338 Ultra Mag using a trued Remington 700 action, a 28" 1:9.3" twist Krieger barrel and a Bell & Carlson M40 tactical stock. What kind of scope (type and magnification) would allow me to shoot this rifle at long range, wringing out the maximum capability of this cartridge?

on my 340 wea mag i had a bushnell 3-12x44 that is now on a varmint rifle. i think it was lrts name. they are changing name all the time. 500 meters was not a problem for the scope and the rifle.

The scope that medvedqc refers to (Bushnell LRTS 3-12x44) is a great scope, I have a few (as well as the 4.5-18 version) and I've used them to shoot out to 1000ish yards. However, I'd suggest something a bit bigger for a 338 Ultra since you'll be able to push out quite a ways farther. I have a .300 Norma Mag being built right now and I'm putting a Bushnell XRS2 4.5-30 on it. It'd suggest any high end 5-25x or higher scope, Leupold, Night Force, Schmidt, etc.

I have a couple Leupold Mk5 5-25s and they are great scopes as well. If you're looking for a great scope that can be found for relatively cheap, I'd suggest hunting around for a Bushnell HDMR2/DMR2 (it's one step below the XRS2) as they can be found for quite a good deal.

I have a Remington 700 LSS .338 RUM. Love the rifle. It currently is sporting a Leupold VXR 4-12x50. Seems to be holding up rather well. It is a hard-kickin' caliber and is no respecter of scopes. Only a rich man can afford to buy a cheap scope when it comes to calibers such as this.

There’s those minox 3-15x56 that GBT is selling like 50% off or something right now, be really good value, or I’d look at something in the mag range of the 3.5-21 or 4.5-27 like the Bushnell HDMR or an Athlon or Delta scope.

The newer strike eagle with bigger tube and zero stop and locking turrets looks good for mag range and value as well.

After that, the night force mentioned above and any other high end with a mag range that gets up to 21 or 30 magnification would be good for an ultra mag.

You didn’t really mention budget and that’s kind of an important factor.
