Hello every one,

I just picked up a Ruger precision rifle in 6.5 and I’m looking to get into some long range shooting. Hopefully get into some competitions one day. My question is what scope would you guys recommend? I’m going to regularly be shooting 300 and 500 yard range but would like the ability to push it farther when and if the opportunity presents itself. I’ve been looking at a vortex viper pst gen 2. I realize the glass is as important if not more than the rifle it’s self but I don’t want to break the bank on the scope.
Thanks in advance for all you help.

If you are into hunting as well as some LR shooting I recommend the 4-16 HS LR Vortex or the 6-24 version. I setup mine this year on a 6.5CM and have been really happy both with close range or long range shooting. Personally because I had the chance to try both for many rounds, I bought the 4x16 but if my eyes were better I may have gone with the 24 power. To me anything after 18 was no use to me as I lost the clairity I wanted.

My Gen1 6.5 cm wears a Sightron Slll 8-32x56 LRMOA...I think this is a perfect scope for this rifle...:)

It also has a Heathen Brake, 2 stage timney, and a IBI 26" heavy SS 8 twist barrel(I think mine was the 1st chamber cut with Ryan's new 6.5 CM reamer a few years ago)

143 ELD-x and 41.5 of H4350 prints easily 5 shot groups in the .4's @100 meters without trying to hard...:)

I have a 5-25 PST Gen 2 in MRAD FFP on my 6.5 RPR. I am very happy with it. Good scope at a reasonable price so you can get range time in and build confidence with your system.

I have a Timney trigger, a 26" ibi barrel, with a Seekins handguard.

With 147gr ELD-M's and 40.85gr H4350 I get 2742-fps and sub .5 MOA easy.

I was able to get sub .75 MOA on 147 Hornady Match ammo and the factory bbl.

The thing I noticed with the ibi bbl was a reduction in MOA, but also a bigger benefit in consistency and reduction in fliers and far less shift in POI as the bbl heated up and fouled during matches.

athlon ares etr 4.5-30x56 Is a great scope for the money. Good glass, tracks perfect. IMO is shoots way higher then it’s price point.

You didn't specify if you feel you want SFP or FFP.

For PRS style shooting, you'll want FFP, but for accurate target shooting you'll want SFP.

Be more fearful of not spending enough than spending too much. You said you want to mind the budget and that's cool, but if that's the case, you'll get better value on the used market. Don't think old glass is bad glass or a used scope is somehow risky. Just get a brand with unconditional warranty and you'll be fine.

There's no free lunch with optics and you'll never find better glass for lower price. Manufactures are very aware of glass quality and price it accordingly.

As for zoom levels, it easy to find a balance where it has enough low end for hunting and enough high end for accuracy, but better to have a low enough low end than not too much high end. That way its still multi purpose. 8-32 x for example would be tight for hunting, but 4-20 is good for both.
