Hey guys, I just got a new anshutz .22, and I want a little advice on what scope to get for it. It's a new 64" MPR. I want it to punch paper at 50-100-200 yards and for a little varmint management. My budget is around 1k...

Wow. Out of my price range. My 190 wears a Mueller 8 -32 and the 64 sporter has a Bushnell Trophy XLT 4-12 AO. A decent choice might be a Weaver V24, my CZ 455 FS has one. It's great to 20x. The higher end Vortex are worth a look, really like my Diamondback 4-12AO. I'll be watching this one, good luck. Keep posting.

Well I'm not really concerned about the price. At first I was thinking a Nikon pro staff 5 or a Nikon monarch. I want a 42 milimetre. But I also wanna try the nightforce shv that just came out as it will cost about 900$...why drop so much on a new anshutz and not get a great scope?

Sounds like a nice rifle, congrats! 200 yard, .22lr shooting isn't something I've ever done, or have a desire TO do, so I can't comment on what scope might be best for that. Assuming it's standard velocity (match-grade?) ammo you're planning on using, the ballistics charts posted (as a sticky in this forum) suggest a scope zeroed @ 50 yards will result in a drop @ 200 yards being somewhere around 57". No scope I've ever had experience with has that much elevation built-in, so you may be looking at some kind of alternate base for the scope if you're keen on trying that out. Any time I seem to push my SV-powered rounds past about 75 yards, it takes next to no wind to push them off course quite easily. Including my Anschutz 1450. I think some members here mess with long-range .22lr shooting, Eagleye might be one of them. I'm sure they could offer more than I could.

Scopes then? Highest magnification for the varmint guns I use is 18x, but that's a function of knowing how much size/weight I know I'll tolerate in 30C temperatures, on long hikes. I have 2 centerfire rifles that wear Vortex Viper HS 4-16x44, BDC reticles. I have another that wears a vintage Bushnell Banner 6-18x. I've never seen a 20x+ scope I'd carry for 5-6kms in the heat, so for a high-dollar bench gun...your needs will likely differ from mine. I personally don't browse the ZEISS, NF, S&B sites for scopes.

I will definitey be talking it on short walks but I don't think weight will bother me to much. I'm a heavy barrel fanatic most of my guns have .920 barrels and weigh about 11-14 pounds. I personally don't have much expierience with shooting 200 yards with a .22, exept with using BDC scopes and Mildots. But it's awesome low budget fun, so I'll do more of it this year! I was mostly wondering if a zeiss or NF would be a total waste of money, and if I could shoot just as well with a scope around the 500$ price range

No a NF is not a total waste of money. for 200 yards you will want lots of magnification. I used an NXS 5.5-22x56 on my 54 ms r and it worked great.

Well I don't want more magnification because I will probably be making the odd 25 yard shot on varmints. So not just a target rifle.

I would suggest you buy a good quality variable that is at 24x at least, or better yet, a 36x fixed power unit.
Nightforce and Sightron seem to work well.

I have 2 - 36X Leupolds and one 36X Weaver on a 40X, a Suhl, and a M37. Both scopes are great for the long range game.
However, if you will be taking close shots as well, then a 6.5-20 glass with EFR may be just right.

It is absolutely amazing what one can do with a 22 rimfire and good optics at 200 meters on a quiet day.
The wind is definitely your enemy, though.

You will need the Signature rings with inserts, or a 20 or 30MOA base to reach out to 200 with most scopes.
See attached group from my 40X at 200. [the squares are ½"]

Don't even bother trying the long range with HV ammo. Find a Match ammo your 64 likes and use that.

Any other questions....just ask. :) Dave.

Congrats on the new rifle!
I bought a Leupold VX2 6-18X40 AO for my CZ452 Silhouette just before Christmas. I was looking for a scope that would have enough field of view to shoot varmints but also have enough magnification to shoot targets up to 100m. It is a compromise but I am very happy with this set up. The scope is awesome; the clarity is superb even at 18x and the AO goes down to about 25 yards. I think I paid around $700 plus tax.

Ok, i don't have a lot of expierience with "match ammo". Would tally rings work? Thanks for the input. I'll definitely be taking shots at 20-50 yards, as well as 100 and 150 as I've said. So I'll need an variable scope for sure. I can probably get a hold of lapua ammo. My anshutz has a rail on the bottom, does anyone know where I can find or make an attachment to accommadate a Harris bipod

If it has a rail, Sinclair has an insert that will fit a stud and attach to a Harris Bipod. They are called Harris Bipod Adapters and the one for the Anschutz is #749-001-420SJ for $10.50.
I have one for my Model 54.
They also sell the various Harris Bipods but you can order direct from Harris Engineering.

Since you want to use this rifle for more than one purpose, your options are a high power scope for target shooting, and a small rim fire variable like Leupold's 2 - 7 x 32 which is nice and compact.
Now you fit each scope with its own ring mounts and switch back and forth depending on your purpose for the day. Leupold makes ring mounts for the rail on your rifle.

Have I done my math wrong? That is only about 26 MOA. As long as you are somewhere close to the bottom of the turrets then you should have lots of elevation. I have never shot more than 100m with my 22 and that is an 11-12 MOA difference from 50m and I have at least double that and then some room left to go on my cheap bushnell.. Someone tell me if I am off base with my calculations

I'm not really fussy on getting 2 scopes for it. I'd rather get a happy medium and go with a 5-20 scope...thanks for the help with the sling swivel stud attachment :) where do I pick up match ammo? I usually buy bullets at cabelas and I don't think they carry that.

You could use the Bushnell 4-30x50 as a multi purpose scope, lots of zoom and a small enough low end for the closer stuff ;) has over 80moa of adjustment too so a 20-25moa rail and you can play out past 300y.

I mounted a Conquest HD5 3-15x42 on my Anschutz 1712, and find it to be an excellent scope. If I was serious about shooting to 200 yards, I would likely go with the HD5 5-25X50.

target shooting products. they have some rws championship ammo that works pretty good, its around 50 a brick, and compares favourably to $100-$120 a brick ammo. Its left over from some euro competition, they bought the remainder of the supply and are selling at heavily discounted prices. I bought a few cases, and was very pleased with it. They also carry a pile of different RWS and Eley
