Scope for BRNO Model 4 - any recommendations?

I am in the process of buying a BRNO Model 4 .22 rifle w/ 28" barrel. This rifle is currently equipped with a fairly sophisticated peep sight mounted on a removable wide dovetail at the rear of the receiver. I like this arrangement, but I am also conscious that being 50 with bifocals, my long distance vision is not what it once was. So, I will probably set up a scope to mount as an alternative to the peep sight.

My experience with scopes for a .22 is limited to an old Weaver 4x fixed; given the obvious quality of this rifle (high) and the probable accuracy (also high), I am interested in what scope folks here would recommend. I'll be using this rifle for benchrest entertainment at the range, and possible also for shooting a few gophers from a portable bench or shooting sticks. Price is always a factor, but quality and suitability of the tool for the task at hand is the main thing.

Opinions, anyone?

I have a Leupold 12x on mine in warne rings,a very sweet set up.I had to get high rings so the bolt would clear the scope,something to keep in mind when scoping a brno#4.I'm sure you will enjoy your new rifle.

My No. 4 wears peep sites usually, but I have a straight 24 power AO Scope with Target turrets and a 1/8 minute Dot recticle. This is in a pair of High CZ rings, Great for benchrest use, not so good for in the field.

Straight 10 to 12 would cover both uses better IMO.
 
I would find it tough to get the short range gophers in the scope with 10X. I have a 4-12 Burris on my #5 and it sits on 4X for gophers and 12X for paper punching.

Mine is now wearing a 36x leupold that was power bumped to 48X (thanks joem) prior to this scope I had a 6-24x40 bausch and lomb 4000. No complaints with the 6-24 for field and bench shooting, but anything over 10 power gets limited shooting in the field. Also having any power scope with an AO in the field can be a pain on quick shots. If you have the funds get two scopes, one for the bench and one for the field, a 6 power fixed scope for the field will suit you fine and of course more magnification for the bench.
 
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Plenty to think about here. For the present, I will probably go with a Bushnell 4-12x40 on Lynx rings (the bolt just clears) as my budget is tight at present. I will probably end up with 2 scopes eventually, one for the field and one for the bench. I have some doubts about how handy this rifle will be for snap shots at gophers, given the weight. However, I think it will be fun to try.
