Scope for M14s?

I just ordered a M14 from Marstar to be my first gun. Keith at Marstar asked me if I want to order any scope or scope mount with it. I had no idea what he was really talking about and thought you guys can give me some help towards what scope/mount I should get with the gun. My budget for the scope + mount is $300.

Decent M14 mounts are expensive (around $200) and the m14 is tough on scopes.

Bushnell 3200's seem to be about the cheapest optic that'll handle the recoil, you should be able to find one for $200-250 depending on the model.

I've ordered the Basset Machine mount for mine. It's around $100 and seems to be getting decent reviews but I'll have to reserve judgment till I get my hands on it. Anything else worth buying will be double.

So i am looking at at least $400 for a decent combination? Do you know if Marstar stocks all of those? What magnification should I use? Would the Nikon scopes work?
 
I think $400 is about minimum as you'll need scope rings too although they aren't terribly expensive if you stick to a basic weaver style.

Marstar does offer mounts and rings but I can't speak to the quality as I've never used theirs. Perhaps others can weigh in?

I know Nikon makes decent scopes but again, having never used one on an M14 I can't say how they'd fare. The initial recoil plus the op rod slamming forward makes for scope abuse.

10X40 and 3-9X40 are probably the two most popular magnifications. If you're likely to hunt at closer distances 3X9 is likely best. It really depends what you for see using the rifle for.

My M14s ATE my IOR Valdada....

Doesnt say much for IOR......

On my other M14s my Bushnell 3200 is working just fine... and at a fraction of the cost...........

Yah Bushy.... in fact I will get another Bushy.....
