scope for Marlin 45-70?

I used a Leupold 1-4 shotgun scope for years and it worked well on my 450 Marlin, a ballistic twin of the 45-70. I especially liked the thicker reticle as it was easy to pick up in the thick bush. A couple of years ago I found a Leupold 1.5-5 (VX111) with heavy reticle and switched to that as it has slightly better optics but the reticle is about the same. So yes, Leupolds are well known for taking a pounding. Good luck with your choice.

Probably my favourite hunting scope. I have about 8 of them, and still grab one used at gun shows whenever I see a good deal on one. I have them on slug guns, .338's, a .416 Rigby and several .375H&H's, including one that has about 1200 rounds on it. No problems...they are durable!

I want to scope my marlin 45-70 guide gun. I was thinking of a used leupold vxll 1-4x20 , budget around $300. will it take the pounding?? or should I consider a shotgun scope instead?

I used that exact scope on one of my 45-70's and a 375 H&H for piles of heavy loads. Never an issue. Now it sits on top of my 300 H&H and still going strong.

Put a Leupold ultimate slam 2X7 on my 45/70 works excelent . Ballistics are same or very close to the 50 cal black powder it was designed for. Now shots to 300 yards are quick and easy.

You can get the VX-1 1.5-4x20 Shotgun Scope with heavy reticle for $199 in the states and around $250 over here brand new. That is a pretty good deal on a real nice scope, the new VX-1's have click adjustments, I would not spend the money on a VX-2.

I put a leupold fx2 2.5 on mine. It has about 5" of eye relief that makes me feel better with the heavy handloads. I had to install an XS rail to get it forward enough though. The trigger happy kit is well worth it too.

Posted before but, here you go 1 leupold fx 2.5 ultralight with some black water 6 screw rings on xs rail.
